Republic XF-103Conceived in the late 1940's as a high speed, high altitude air defence interceptor and developed through the 1950's as a Mach 3 interceptor capable of operating against Soviet strategic bombers in stratosphere and possibly extending toward the mesosphere, the Republic XF-103 (Model AP-57) was an unsuccessful entrant in the USAF MX-1554 competition that fielded the Convair F-102 Delta Dagger interceptor. Post-MX-1554, the XF-103 took on the mantle of a research program to prove technologies applicable to a future generation mid-supersonic - Mach 3 - interceptor. However, like the later North American F-108 Mach 3 interceptor concept, the XF-103 was ultimately doomed due to cost and a looming redundancy facilitated by a shifting strategic threat in the shape of the intercontinental ballistic missile, which was in its infancy when the XF-103 program was cancelled in 1959.This volume looks at the genesis and development of the various iterations of the Republic XF-103 from program inception through cancellation in 1959. The volume is supported by photographs, technical drawings, renderings and planned performance charts from the contractor and intended operator. There is a deliberate switch from metric measurements to the fore and imperial measurements secondary in chapter one to imperial to the fore and metric secondary in subsequent chapters. This has been done to ensure 100% accuracy in primary measurement reporting from respective designer/test organisations, whereas secondary measurements may, at times, be rounded to the nearest cm or kg.

This is a print on demand edition of a hard to find publication. The proposed FY 2010 defense budget requests $1,859.5 million for the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) program. The issue for Congress discussed in this report is: What should be the role of sea-based systems in U.S. ballistic missile defense, and are DoD¿s programs for sea-based BMD capabilities appropriately structured and funded? Potential issues for Congress re: sea-based BMD systems include the number of SM-3 interceptors planned for procurement, whether development of a far-term sea-based terminal defense BMD capability should be accelerated, technical risk in the Aegis BMD program, the number of Aegis BMD ships, and the role of Aegis BMD in European missile defense. Solid Divert Breakthroughs That Enable Mission Flexible Tmd Interceptors written by and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with categories.

This paper describes technology breakthroughs in solid divert propulsion that provide extensive mission flexibility to theater missile defense (TMD) interceptors over previous solid propellant divert systems. TMD interceptors must cover large battlespaces to minimize the total number of launchers and deployed missiles. They must defend against a broad set of targets, from short to long ranges. Effectiveness against current and emerging TMD targets is ensured when a fully controllable Divert and Attitude Control System (DACS) is used to maneuver the interceptor to impact. Operational requirements demand this DACS use solid propellant for user safety and cost minimization. Aerojet has recently accomplished several technology breakthroughs which demonstrate a solid DACS can be built with the mission flexibility of a liquid. This DACS called EXCELS (Endo, eXo, Controllable, Extinguishable, Lightweight, Solid), is the industry's first truly controllable solid DACS. Aerojet's EXCELS DACS has been under development since 1991 with IR & D funding Since then, four key development tests have been performed that validate the technology. Results are summarized in this paper. Aerojet is now supporting the BMDO, Navy and Army with contracts to further develop the EXCELS DACS for the SM-3 Block 2 Risk Reduction effort and the Atmospheric Interceptor Program (AIT). DACS development progress made on these programs in Winter and Spring 1998 are included in this paper.

The United States has pursued missile defenses since the dawn of the missile age shortly after World War II. The development and deployment of missile defenses has not only been elusive, but has proven to be one of the most divisive issues of the past generation. The Bush Administration substantially altered the debate over missile defenses. The Administration requested significant funding increases for missile defense programs, eliminated the distinction between national and theater missile defense, restructured the missile defense program to focus more directly on developing deployment options for a "layered" capability to intercept missiles aimed at U.S. territory across the whole spectrum of their flight path, adopted a new, untried development and acquisition strategy, announced U.S. withdrawal from the 1972 Anti-ballistic Missile Treaty, and is deploying an initial national missile defense capability. Critics, however, take issue with assertions that the threat is increasing, citing evidence that the number of nations seeking or possessing nuclear weapons has actually declined over the past twenty years. Moreover, they argue that the technology for effective missile defense remains immature, that deployment is provocative to allies, friends, and adversaries, and it is a budget-buster that reduces the availability of funds to modernize and operate U.S. conventional military forces. They argue especially that some major powers view U.S. missile defense as an attempt at strategic domination and that other, such as China, will expand their missile capabilities in response.

In early 2007, the Bush Admin. proposed deploying a ground-based mid-course defense element in Europe of the larger Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMD) to defend against an Iranian missile threat. On Sept. 17, 2009, the Obama Admin. canceled the Bush-proposed program. Instead, Defense Sec. Gates announced U.S. plans to deploy a regional BMD capability that can be deployed around the world on relatively short notice during crises or as the situation may demand. A computer program is described which calculates the trajectory of a ground-launched vehicle intercepting a maneuvering re-entry body. The motion is planar and proportional navigation is used. Allowance is made for the finite length of time it takes the data acquisition system to process the tracking data, and for the time lag between the demand for a new course and the response to that demand. The Fortran listing of the program and a sample calculation are given. (Author).
