Sociological perspectives can be used to analyse societal and structural influences on human behaviour at individual, group and community levels. The authors link sociological concepts, debates and theories relating to key areas such as poverty, social exclusion, education, social class and social justice to develop your students′ understanding of how sociological perspectives will impact upon their social work placements and practice. This book begins by taking you step-by-step through the ins and outs of why sociology is important to social work. It explains the relevance of sociology to everyday social work practice, introducing you to the core sociological perspectives that you′ll need to get to grips with during your course, including functionalism, Marxism, symbolic interactionism and postmodernism. The book then moves on to explore various social issues in detail (i.e. poverty, social class, social exclusion, education, moral panics), with extended case studies, activities and links to skills in practice illustrating the many opportunities and challenges that each aspect brings to everyday practice. There are also important chapters on family, community and the role of sociology in social work training.

The African diaspora have been subjected to oppression for decades since the end of the transatlantic slave trade. In recent times this oppression has been most visible in the form of live killing and murder executed by law enforcement officers. However, the extent of the problems that face people of colour in the West are not limited to police brutality; the challenges are much broader spanning across every area of society: from politics and law to health and housing to economics and entrainment. Not only are the challenges wide-ranging, they are often interconnected. Following the death of George Floyd and the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement, for the first-time people from all walks of life in the West stood up together to push back against racial oppression. This book provides an overview of the key challenges facing the African Diaspora, how things can be improved, and how they are related.

In Race in Mind, Alexander Alland challenges the idea that intelligence is related to race, offering critiques of the biological determinism of Carlton Coon, Arthur Jensen, Cyril Burt, Robert Ardrey, Konrad Lorenz, William Shockley, and others. Presenting evolutionary genetics in understandable and accessible language, Alland demonstrates that biologically, "race" cannot explain human variation. Written in a lively, conversational style, Alland imparts real, substantive scientific arguments and cuts through the ideological posturing and jargon that so often characterizes our discussions about race, showing us a more nuanced and scientifically valid way to understand the diversity that is the human conditio

Race In The Making written by Lawrence A. Hirschfeld and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996 with Philosophy categories.

Race in the Making provides a new understanding of how people conceptualize social categories and shows why this knowledge is so readily recruited to create and maintain systems of unequal power. Hirschfeld argues that knowledge of race is not derived from observations of physical difference nor does it develop in the same way as knowledge of other social categories. Instead, his central claim is that racial thinking is the product of a special-purpose cognitive competence for understanding and representing human kinds. The book also challenges the conventional wisdom that race is purely a social construction by demonstrating that a common set of abstract principles underlies all systems of racial thinking, whatever other historical and cultural specificities may be associated with them. Starting from the commonplace observation that race is a category of both power and the mind, Race in the Making directly tackles this issue. Through a sustained exploration of continuity and change in the child's notion of race and across historical variations in the race concept, Hirschfeld shows that a singular commonsense theory about human kinds constrains the way racial thinking changes, whether in historical time or during childhood. After surveying the literature on the development of a cultural psychology of race, Hirschfeld presents original studies that examine children's (and occasionally adults') representations of race. He sketches how a jointly cultural and psychological approach to race might proceed, showing how this approach yields new insights into the emergence and elaboration of racial thinking.

Transition Of The Mind written by Tony Cloud, PhD and has been published by WestBowPress this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-12-12 with Social Science categories.

Author Tony Cloud grew up in Wheaton, Maryland, when the metropolitan area of Washington, DC, earned the title “Crime Capital of the World.” He knows firsthand the ugliness that crime perpetuates. In Transition of the Mind, he shows how drugs and violence have affected the hearts of the entire world and discusses how action must be taken before it’s too late. This study journeys into the hearts of deprived, devalued, and distressed inner-city children. Based on real lives and true events in the ghetto and suburban areas, it answers many questions that have been asked by parents and grandparents around the nation: • Why are so many young people joining gangs, and how do we get them out? • What kinds of laws or rules are necessary for inner-city survival? • How has poverty cheapened the value of life? • Besides abortion, how are children murdered without a weapon? • What is the power of a gangsta in underprivileged areas? • Is racism truly alive, and does it exists on every level of life? Heartfelt and raw, Transition of the Mind provides insight into the challenges of street life for many young people in inner-city settings. It shows that through discipline and faith in God and themselves, they can overcome the challenges and become righteous people.
