From its eighteenth-century roots in exploration and trade, to the major conflicts of the First and Second World Wars, through to current roles in multinational operations with United Nations and NATO forces, Canada's navy - now celebrating its one hundredth anniversary - has been an expression of Canadian nationhood and a catalyst in the complex process of national unity. In the second edition of Canada's Navy, Marc Milner brings his classic work up to date and looks back at one hundred years of the Navy in Canada. With supplementary photos, updated sources, a new preface and epilogue, and an additional chapter on the Navy's global reach from 1991 to 2010, this edition carries Canadian Naval history into the twenty-first century. Milner brings effortless prose and exacting attention to detail to his comprehensive and accessible examination of this fascinating Canadian organization. This much-needed update of Canada's Navy will continue to provoke discussion about the past and future of the country's naval forces and their evolving role in the interwoven issues of maritime politics and economics, defence and strategy, and national and foreign policy.

Excerpt from The Persian Gulf and South Sea Isles A trip I took up the Persian Gulf in 1901 with Sir E - d O'M y, who came from the Embassy at Constantinople to try a case of a British subject in Bagdad, gave me the chance of seeing many out-of-the-way scenes and places of interest. So few tourists who go out to revel in the delights of the East ever seem to visit these parts, that I was persuaded to put these notes, made on the spot, into book form. Suffice it to say, that it is necessary for anyone desirous of making the trip to be careful to go fully equipped with useful letters of introduction. No hotels exist, and, as soon as the steamers have left, one depends entirely on the kind hospitality and advice of the different residents. On journeys inland, far out of the beaten tracks, without consular assistance, you carry your life in your hands, and are at the mercy of thieves and brigands. The Way To Isfahan written by Pierre Loti and has been published by Gerlach Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-07-02 with History categories.

From 17 April, 1900, to 6 June of that year, Pierre Loti travelled in a private capacity from Bushire on the Persian Gulf, northwards through Shiraz, Persepolis, Isfahan and Tehran, before returning via the Caspian Sea to Europe. This is the personal day-by-day account of his journey, the hardships of the mountainous terrain and the empty desert. Loti excels in his descriptions of the world around him: the sky, the mountains, the fertile plains, the deserted desert. His descriptions of the people he meets, their dress and manners are remarkable. Loti had come from India and on his way to the Gulf, he stopped off at Muscat and his account of this brief visit was published as 'En passant a Mascate' (Passing through Muscat). This is the first English translation of both texts.

Two Edged Sword written by Nicholas Tracy and has been published by McGill-Queen's University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-10-01 with History categories.

In the first major study of the Royal Canadian Navy's contribution to foreign policy, Nicholas Tracy takes a comprehensive look at the paradox that Canada faces in participating in a system of collective defence as a means of avoiding subordination to other countries. Created in 1910 to support Canadian autonomy, the Royal Canadian Navy has played an important role in defining Canada's relationship with the United Kingdom, the United States, and NATO. Initially involved with participation in Imperial and Commonwealth defence, the RCN's role shifted following the Second World War to primarily ensuring the survival of the NATO alliance and deflecting American influence over Canada. Tracy demonstrates the ways in which the Navy's priorities have realigned since the end of the Cold War, this time partnering with the US and NATO navies in global policing. Insightful, detailed, and grounded in solid historical scholarship, A Two-Edged Sword presents a complete portrait of the shifting relevance and future of a cornerstone of Canadian defence.
