The Religious Paintings Of Giambattista Tiepolo written by William L. Barcham and has been published by Oxford University Press, USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1989 with Art categories.

This is the first work to concentrate on the great religious paintings of Giambattista Tiepolo (1696-1770), who produced some of the most ravishing devotional images in Western Art. Scrutinizing both iconography and technique, Barcham shows that Tiepolo's religious art represented the ultimate artistic embodiment of the Venetian Republic's sentiments in that it expressed Venetian patriotism, tradition, and national identity.

Published in conjunction with an exhibit which opened in Venice in 1996 and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York during the first part of 1997. The exhibit organizers aimed to show Tiepolo as one of the presiding geniuses of the European imagination. In essays and entries on every work shown, the text illuminates his formation; his mastery of mythological and poetic subjects; his religious pictures; his excursions into portraiture and studies of ideal heads; and the process by which he proceeded from initial ideas--small- scale sketches--to large canvases and frescoes. Beautifully produced, the volume makes a stunning impact, and will have to suffice for those who can't make it to the exhibit itself. Giambattista Tiepolo (1696-1770) was the greatest Italian painter of the eighteenth century, best known for his monumental frescoes and epic altarpieces. The scale of these paintings is immense, even overpowering. Yet some of Tiepolo's finest work can be found in the small oil sketches that he often made in preparation for these grand commissions. Published to coincide with an exhibition at the J. Paul Getty Museum, Giambattista Tiepolo: Fifteen Oil Sketches brings together a group of the artist's oil sketches from the Courtauld Institute in London that spans his entire career and reveals the amazing confidence and fluidity with which he created these paintings. The unusual intimacy of these preparatory sketches-made directly on the canvas with no preliminary underdrawing-reveals a great artist's vigorous imagination at work. The exhibit will run from May 3, 2005, to September 4, 2005. An introductory essay situates these works within the context of eighteenth-century art and Tiepolo's life and career.

This volume, which accompanies the tricentenary exhibition of Tiepolo's work held at the Museo del Settecento Veneziano, Ca' Rezzonico in Venice and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, explores the various aspects of Tiepolo's artistic production. In essays and in entries on every work shown, eight American and European authorities illuminate his formation (still poorly understood); his mastery of mythological and poetic subjects; his deeply moving religious pictures; his rare excursions into portraiture and studies of ideal heads; and the process by which he proceeded from initial ideas - realized in dazzling small-scale oil sketches - to large canvases and frescoes. Written for the scholar and general reader alike, these texts are lavishly supported by illustrations of Tiepolo's works and those of his predecessors and contemporaries. A documented chronology of Tiepolo's life and art, detailed provenances, references, and a bibliography are provided.

"This exhibition catalogue considers the cultural context of the artist's development as a redute, or view painter. Essays by William Barcham, Eugene J. and Leslie Nichols Johnson, Alexandra Libby, and Stanton Thomas provide a context for the catalogue entries on the genre pictures, landscapes, religious paintings, and the decorative arts made by Canaletto and his contemporaries. The result is a unique and multi-faceted portrait of a city at a critical moment in the history of art. A collaborative effort of the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art and The John and Mable Ringling Museum in Sarasota, Florida, Venice in the Age of Canaletto offers a fascinating look at sumptuous paintings, prints, and decorative arts from the famed floating city." --Book Jacket.
