The 139km (87-mile) Ridgeway National Trail meanders across Southern England from Overton Hill near Avebury to Ivinghoe Beacon, passing through 5 counties: Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire. The Ridgeway allows you to explore the contrasting chalk landscapes of the North Wessex Downs AONB with its wide open chalk downs and the more intimate, wooded countryside of the Chilterns AONB. The trail follows tracks that have been walked for over 5000 years, making it probably 'the oldest road in Britain'. Along its length early man has left some remarkable features from the UNESCO World Heritage site of Avebury to the magical presence of Wayland's Smithy and the rightly famous Uffington White Horse that has looked out over the Vale of the White Horse for over 3000 years, as well as Iron Age hill forts and earthworks.
