Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2009 in the subject Theology - Historic Theology, Ecclesiastical History, grade: A-, Prairie Bible Institute, course: History of the Growth of Christianity, language: English, abstract: Muhammad ibn Abdullah, the last prophet and founder of Islam, is one of the most influential people who walked on this earth. By the time of the prophet's death at the age of sixty-two he had brought into existence a dynamic movement that would carry Islam through the centuries and across the continents, birthing empires, transforming the sciences, and challenging economic, cultural, and political systems. Considering the religion of Islam, one may wonder who this Muhammad, the last prophet, was and how his instructions were shaped by the cultural, economical, social and religious environment in which he lived. The other questions that may rise are how this small movement could become within centuries the dominant religion of the Mediterranean, and why Christianity was not able to stop it. This essay will propose that it was due to the lack of unity among Christians on the one hand and on the other hand to Muhammad s attractive instructions about brotherhood and solidarity among his followers, fervour, faith, simplicity of Islam, moral values, and the use of the sword that Islam augmented so rapidly and displaced Christianity.

This classic biography is not a religious text designed to either celebrate or denigrate Islam. It looks at Mohammed as a towering figure of culture and politics, a man who achieved the extraordinary: uniting disparate Arab tribes into a more cohesive whole. This book remains an important work for anyone wishing to understand the roots of one of the most intractable sociopolitical divides-between East and West, Muslim and Christian-still haunting the world today. Author David S. Margoliouth (1858-1940), a professor of Arabic at Oxford University, worked from primary Arabic texts and omitted "all anecdotes that are obviously or most probably fabulous," resulting in a clear-headed history of a highly contentious moment in time.

Eastern Rome And The Rise Of Islam written by Olof Heilo and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-11-19 with History categories.

The emergence of Islam in the seventh century AD still polarises scholars who seek to separate religious truth from the historical reality with which it is associated. However, history and prophecy are not solely defined by positive evidence or apocalyptic truth, but by human subjects, who consider them to convey distinct messages and in turn make these messages meaningful to others. These messages are mutually interdependent, and analysed together provide new insights into history. It is by way of this concept that Olof Heilo presents the decline of the Eastern Roman Empire as a key to understanding the rise of Islam; two historical processes often perceived as distinct from one another. Eastern Rome and the Rise of Islam highlights significant convergences between Early Islam and the Late Ancient world. It suggests that Islam’s rise is a feature of a common process during which tensions between imperial ambitions and apocalyptic beliefs in Europe and the Middle East cut straight across today’s theological and political definitions. The conquests of Islam, the emergence of the caliphate, and the transformation of the Roman and Christian world are approached from both prophetic anticipations in the Ancient and Late Ancient world, and from the Medieval and Modern receptions of history. In the shadow of their narratives it becomes possible to trace the outline of a shared history of Christianity and Islam. The "Dark Ages" thus emerge not merely as a tale of sound and fury, but as an era of openness, diversity and unexpected possibilities. Approaching the rise of Islam as a historical phenomenon, this book opens new perspectives in the study of early religion and philosophy, as well as providing a valuable resource for students and scholars of Islamic Studies.
