Excerpt from The Teaching of Citizenship A Book must be judged by its purpose and by the way in which it meets that purpose. The first test may be stated quite distinctly by the author; the second test must be applied by the reader. In order that this volume may not be judged by ends which it does not seek to reach, it may be well to state the intent. The purpose is to suggest certain natural and human starting points for the teaching of patriotism and citizenship. It is not claimed that the book is an exhaustive treatise, even of its simple kind. It suggests directions rather than goals. It does not offer a storehouse of information, nor does it seek to fill minds with lists and classifications. It rather aims to guide an instinct and promote a sentiment. From this it is plain that the material cannot be merely historical. Perhaps no study has been more closely related to citizenship than has history. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book explores alternative models of civics and citizenship education. Specifically, it uses Justice Citizens, a participatory research and film-making project, as a tool to examine young people’s ideas about active citizenship and participation in public spaces. It introduces a framework that seeks to explore the diverse and apparently contradictory nature of young people’s active citizenship. The framework draws on complexity theory combined with critical pedagogy and democratic education to formulate an approach to developing active citizenship among young people. This approach extends theories of both critical pedagogy and education for citizenship, and by doing so seeks to explain the variegated nature of young people’s engagement with civil society. This book contains a valuable repository of ideas and resources for application for teachers to use in schools and classrooms. Academics engaged in initial teacher education, at both primary and secondary levels, will find the framework of use when describing the importance and new approaches to civics and citizenship education within the current school and policy environments.

Excerpt from The Teaching of Citizenship: An Outline for Grades One to Nine Inclusive I teaching of citizenship in all grades. Mr. H. C. Moeller, County Superintendent of Schools in Black Hawk County, asked the Extension Department of Iowa State Teachers College to prepare for his teachers an outline for such teach ing. It was at the suggestion of Mr. Irving Hart, Director of the Extension Department, that I prepared the outline requested. The outline was prepared in the form of a series of lessons and presented to the teachers of Black Hawk County in General Study Centers in 1919 - 20. These lessons were put out in pamphlet form the following year by the Extension Department and distributed to the teachers of Iowa. It is this material that forms the basis for the present manual.
