The world to which the Gospel of Mark introduces its reader is a world of conflicts and suspense, enigmas and secrets, questions and overturning of evidence, irony and surprise. Its principal actor, Jesus, is perplexing in the extreme. He is evidently so for the religious authorities who oppose him, but also for his disciples, who shift from incomprehension to opposition and flight. Questions of meaning, life and death, good and evil are continually broached. This narrative is a subtle invitation to enter into a new world, that of the coming Reign of God, in which the first are last and whoever wants to save his life must lose it. This commentary on the Gospel of Mark has been enthusiastically reviewed in the French edition as one of the best current commentaries on Mark. As a narrative critical commentary, it favors an interpretation of the Gospel that tries to grasp the dynamic of the text taken as a whole. Even if the technical vocabulary of narrative analysis is not used, and the main results of the historical-critical criticism, particularly those of redaction criticism, are not neglected, as the notes will reveal, it is narrative criticism that guides the proceedings.

This book is an exciting, concise, and complete presentation of the gospel of the kingdom. It is an insightful update and upgrade of the gospel of the kingdom according to Saint Mark, which is the shortest of the four gospels. Many are trying to spread the gospel of the kingdom by providing lost souls copies of the whole Bible. This is like giving a hungry baby a porterhouse steak to eat. Of course, the baby cannot handle it. Others pass out tracts or pamphlets, which fail to give our Savior all the credit for all he has done. This work gives the whole story of his life, teachings, sacrifice, and victory over death. It will be a powerful tool for those dedicated to spreading the gospel of the kingdom to all nations. The goal of this book is to bring reverence, respect, and honor to the name of our Lord and Savior. It lifts him as our king in Earth as he will be lifted as King of kings in Heaven. It uses his Hebrew name and identifies him as King Yeshua. Several years ago, someone asked, "Why do you Christians obey and worship someone who is at most a Jewish Rabbi?" Sadly, there was no satisfactory answer for him. A careful study of the four gospel reveals that none of them directly identifies the Savior as a king. The wise men recognized his royalty at his birth, when they presented him royal gifts and worshipped him. Finally, at his crucifixion in defiance of his enemies, Pilate recognized his kingship at his death. His enemies did everything they could to deny his kingship. This book gives him the crown they did not want him to have. It acknowledges his kingship and refuses to let them win. No, we do not obey and worship a Jewish Rabbi. We obey and worship King Yeshua, who is the Son of God, the King of kings, the malik Almuluk, Wan wang Zhi wang, Hari ng mga Hari, Roi des Rois, Konig der Konige, Raja'o no raja, raajaon ke raja, O no nakanoo, wang jung wang, rei dos reis, Korol' Koroley, Rey de Reyes, raja raja, Mfalme wa Wafalme, and vua cua cac vi vua yenegesitati nigusi. He is King of kings.

Studies In The Gospel Of Mark written by Martin Hengel and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-03-14 with Religion categories.

Here Professor Hengel argues with a wealth of documentation that the traditional views of the origin and tradition of the Gospel of Mark have far more to be said for them than has been usually allowed by modern New Testament scholars. He argues that the tradition contained in the Gospel is that handed down by Peter through Mark, and that the Gospel was written in Rome in AD 69. The famous note by Papias quoted in Eusebius' 'Church History' is not to be dismissed, but has every appearance of being reliable. Further evidence in support of this view can be found in a detailed consideration of the titles of the Gospels, which must have been attached to the Gospels at a very early stage, if only to identify them. An appendix, by the distinguished classical philologist Wolfgang Schadewaldt, on 'The Reliability of the Synoptic Tradition,' is used to add further weight to the case. With his customary learning, Professor Hengel has produced a powerful argument which those who have held more radical views than his own will have to consider very carefully indeed if they are to continue to carry conviction.

At the time of Christ, world politics was an ebb and flow of colliding empires and forces. The world knew only dynastic succession and rule by force. Israel was swept up in this world. Her expectations of deliverance, while diverse, had in common the anticipation of violent liberation by an alliance of God, the expected one (Theo), and Israel's forces. Her vision included the subjugation of the world to Yahweh. Any messianic claimant would be expected to fulfill this hope. Mark's story of Jesus must be read against such expectations of military power. Mark knows that Jesus' plan of salvation differed radically from this. Rather than liberation through revolution, it involved deliverance through humble, loving service, and cross-bearing. However, the disciples follow Jesus but do not understand Jesus' purpose. They constantly expect war. So, the Gospel is then read from Mark's full understanding and the disciples' flawed perspective. In volume two of Jesus in a World of Colliding Empires, Keown continues to unpack Mark's Gospel (8:30-16:8), in which Jesus teaches the disciples what it means to be a Servant Messiah rather than a military conqueror. The then draws a range of conclusions and applications from Mark for life today.

The earliest of the four Gospels, the book portrays Jesus as an enigmatic figure, struggling with enemies, his inner and external demons, and with his devoted but disconcerted disciples. Unlike other gospels, his parables are obscure, to be explained secretly to his followers. With an introduction by Nick Cave

To Christians worldwide, the man Jesus of Nazareth is the centerpiece of history, the object of faith, hope, and worship. Even those who do not follow him admit the vast influence of his life. For anyone interested in knowing more about Jesus, study of the four biblical Gospels is essential. The second edition of Four Portraits, One Jesus has been updated throughout to meet the needs to today's students. It is a thorough yet accessible introduction to the four biblical Gospels and their subject, the life and person of Jesus. Like different artists rendering the same subject using different styles and points of view, the Gospels paint four highly distinctive portraits of the same remarkable Jesus. With clarity and insight, Mark Strauss illuminates these four books addressing the following important areas: First he addresses the nature, origin, methods for study, and historical, religious, and cultural backgrounds of the Gospels. He then moves on to closer study of each narrative and its contribution to our understanding of Jesus, investigating things such as plot, characters, and theme. Finally, he pulls it all together with a detailed examination of what the Gospels teach about Jesus' ministry, message, death, and resurrection, with excursions into the quest for the historical Jesus and the historical reliability of the Gospels. This textbook together with its workbook, video lectures, and laminated sheet gives students everything they need for a thorough and enriching study of Jesus and the Gospels.
