Just before dawn in Stone Harbor, Maine, two men meet in the bathhouse in a wooded park. "So what do you have in mind?" one asks. "A little surprise," the other answers before beating him to death with a steel flashlight. Newspaper editor John Quinn and his wife have returned to his hometown to raise their son, but real estate prices have soared and natives are being pushed out. Then a popular politician and family man is murdered at a well-known gay pickup spot. The victim was Quinn's childhood friend, Paul Stanwood. Quinn insists Paul was only investigating a police crackdown at the park. When the police chief and others seem to ignore and downplay obvious clues, Quinn takes matters into his own hands. Even though his wife's car is vandalized and a source is severely beaten after he speaks out on the hidden violence against gays, Quinn refuses to stop looking for answers. With so many people hiding secrets -- secrets some are willing to kill for -- Quinn has to find out the truth about his friend's murder before he, too, is permanently silenced.

Objectivity And The Language Dependence Of Thought written by Christian Barth and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-06-03 with Philosophy categories.

Does thought depend on language? Primarily as a consequence of the cognitive turn in empirical disciplines like psychology and ethology, many current empirical researchers and empirically minded philosophers tend to answer this question in the negative. This book rejects this mainstream view and develops a philosophical argument in favor of a universal dependence of language on thought. In doing so, it comprises insights of two primary representatives of 20th century and contemporary philosophy, namely Donald Davidson and Robert Brandom. Barth offers an introduction to the debate concerning the language-dependence of thought and lays the methodological foundation for the subsequent argument in favor of a universal dependence of thought on language, presenting an account and defense of the transcendental method in reference to the writings of Peter F. Strawson. He then offers a transcendental argument in favor of a universal language-dependence of thought, beginning with a reevaluation of a basic idea for an argument originally presented by Donald Davidson. Later, two main objections to the conclusion of this transcendental argument are addressed and rejected using Robert Brandom’s inferentialist and normativist account of thought and language. In the course of doing so, the recent debate on Brandom’s work is addressed extensively, and main objections to Brandom’s work are presented and answered.

The hagiographic materials from the world's religions can tell us much about the beliefs and practices of the people, yet the limited degree to which hagiography has been used as an instrument for understanding diverse religious traditions is surprising. Hagiography and Religious Truth provides a clearer understanding of the ways hagiography functions to disclose truth for practitioners and suggests various ways that these underexploited sources enrich our comprehension of broader issues in religious studies. This volume provides a much-needed cross-cultural and interreligious comparison of saints' lives, iconography, and devotional practices. The contributors show that hagiographic sources can in fact be "truths of manifestation,†? which function as vehicles for prefiguring, configuring, and refiguring religious, social, and cultural life. The editors argue that some meanings simply cannot be communicated effectively through historical-critical methodologies. By exploring how hagiography functions throughout several of the world's religious traditions, this volume illustrates how various modes of hagiography articulate religious ideas and uniquely represent conceptions of sanctity.

Being in love and full of anticipation of a great life does not shield young couples from unfair and unexpected challenges and trauma. This book is not an elaborate "how-to" or "self-help" manual for when the going gets rough. It's just a true story about a couple that continued to put one foot in front of the other when they would rather have given up; it's about love and faith and standing fast against adversity. The Way Life Is takes readers into the home of a young couple trying to accommodate their own needs, desires and demons while coping with the special needs of their children: Sara, born with a rare and life threatening disability known as Prader-Willi Syndrome; Gina, who arrived needing open-heart surgery in order to survive; and Andrew, an active and exceptionally healthy little boy stuck in the middle. Readers' Comments "...as I read it I am struck by what a wonderful personal account it is, not only of your family's experiences, but the part of the story that is universal and inspiring, every couple's struggle with love and adversity. May it bless many, many families around the world!" Joanne Klassen, author of Transformative Writing "Congratulations on what I think is a truly incredible book... it is all beautifully written and the introduction is especially nicely done... the type that grabs a reader right away and makes them want to read more. I think you are going to find that your book really connects with people and will not only comfort, but also inspire them." Brenda Fehr, Entertainment Editor, Transcontinental Media Inc.
