To study this composer is to study the tastes and trends of the American people from 1912 through World War II. This bio-bibliography presents Carpenter's life and works, as well as the contemporary views, reviews, and criticisms that reveal historical attitudes and prejudices of American life in those troubled times. Looking back several decades, it is possible to discover what was enduring, what was transitory, and what elements would become important to our present state of musical composition. This volume includes a biography, a list of works and performances, a discography, and an annotated bibliography and will be of interest to students of music, dancers and choreographers, history buffs, and music lovers alike. Throughout, one will find many gems from reviews. Although Carpenter was an American with a Harvard education who quoted American popular tunes, he was also an eclectic. He wrote many works in a French impressionistic style, some with Germanic forms, and sometimes borrowing Spanish, Russian, and Oriental melodies, rhythms, and instruments. He was inspired by programmatic ideas and even wrote the program notes for his Adventures in a Perambulator suite. Humor and fantasy can be found in this suite, which depicts a baby's stroll through the park with its nurse, and in Krazy Kat, his jazz pantomime based on George Herriman's cartoon strip. Jazz first appeared at the Metropolitan Opera House in the 1926 production of Skyscrapers, Carpenter's ballet of work and play. Carpenter was born in Park Ridge, Illinois, 28 February 1876 and died 26 April 1951 in Chicago. New recordings of his music have recently been issued in LP and CD formats.

This vintage volume comprises the English translation of Rabindranath Tagore's 'Gitanjali', a collection of one-hundred-and-three poems first published by the 'India Society of London' in 1912. This beautiful collection, translated by Tagore himself, is sure to be enjoyed by a wide range of poetry-lovers, and is a veritable must-read for anyone unfamiliar with the seminal work of Tagore. Rabindranath Tagore was a Bengali polymath who single-handedly reformed Bengali literature and music through 'Contextual Modernism' in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. Many antiquarian books such as this are increasingly rare and expensive, and it is with this in mind that we are republishing this vintage book now in an affordable, modern edition complete with a new prefatory biography of the author.

Gitanjali written by Rabindranath Tagore and has been published by Penguin Books India this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with Bengali poetry categories.

Described by Rabindranath Tagore as 'revelations of my true self', the poems and songs of Gitanjali established the writer's literary talent worldwide. They include eloquent sonnets such as the famous 'Where the mind is without fear', intense explorations of love, faith and nature ('Light, oh where is the light?') and tender evocations of childhood ('When my play was with thee'). In this new translation to mark Tagore's one-hundred-and-fiftieth birth anniversary, William Radice renders with beauty and precision the poetic rhythm and intensity of the Bengali originals. In his arrangement of Tagore's original sequence of poems alongside his translations, Radice restores to Gitanjali the structure, style and conception that were hidden by W. B. Yeats's edition of 1912, making this book a magnificent addition to the Tagore library.

“Gitanjali” of Rabindranath Tagore: With Critical Evaluations, which was originally published with the same title and content in 2006, depicts Tagore’s spiritual journey towards the Supreme Being. It is a collection of devotional songs in which he offers his prayer to God. But the religious fervour of these songs never affects the poetic beauty. It appeals to the readers with its oceanic depth expressed in simplicity, optimism and spiritual affirmation, richness and variety, humanization of the divine, use of domestic image and symbols. The relationship between the Supreme Being and human being is shown. This book is a modest endeavour to evaluate the complete poems. Nature, common people, music, humanity, sympathy and sense-perceptions are the core feelings of these poems. Tagore uses a wide range of vivid and picturesque image and symbols, which are drawn from everyday life as well as from age-old myths. Several symbols like light, boat, cloud, pitcher, flute, palace, flowers, river, star, sky recur in his songs. These natural objects are used to convey deeper spiritual truth.
