The surprising and illuminating look at how Tolkien's love of science and natural history shaped the creation of his Middle Earth, from its flora and fauna to its landscapes. The world J.R.R. Tolkien created is one of the most beloved in all of literature, and continues to capture hearts and imaginations around the world. From Oxford to ComiCon, the Middle Earth is analyzed and interpreted through a multitude of perspectives. But one essential facet of Tolkien and his Middle Earth has been overlooked: science. This great writer, creator of worlds and unforgettable character, and inventor of language was also a scientific autodidact, with an innate interest and grasp of botany, paleontologist and geologist, with additional passions for archeology and chemistry. Tolkien was an acute observer of flora and fauna and mined the minds of his scientific friends about ocean currents and volcanoes. It is these layers science that give his imaginary universe—and the creatures and characters that inhabit it—such concreteness. Within this gorgeously illustrated edition, a range of scientists—from astrophysicists to physicians, botanists to volcanologists—explore Tolkien’s novels, poems, and letters to reveal their fascinating scientific roots. A rewarding combination of literary exploration and scientific discovery, The Science of Middle Earth reveals the hidden meaning of the Ring’s corruption, why Hobbits have big feet, the origins of the Dwarves, the animals which inspired the dragons, and even whether or not an Ent is possible. Enhanced by superb original drawings, this transportive work will delight both Tolkien fans and science lovers and inspire us to view both Middle Earth—and our own world—with fresh eyes.

Borne On The Wind written by Mary Fairburn and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-10-27 with categories.

Borne on the Wind is the compelling autobiography of English artist Mary Fairburn. This second edition features an additional eight colour plates (illustrations seen by JRR Tolkien); a selection of Mary's The Lord of the Rings suite, from a private collection in the UK. Mary has led an extraordinary life: from camping with lions in the Serengeti to volunteering at Mother Teresa's 'Home for the destitute and dying' in Kolkata, which she relates in a humorous, thoughtful and engaging way.Although marked by the disruptions of war, Mary Fairburn's early life was a magical time, immersed in art, friendships and the landscape of southern England. She was inspired creatively and spiritually by myth and story, particularly by the English fantasy tradition of C.S Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, which eventually led her to illustrate The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien himself was very impressed by Mary's work: 'I think the samples you sent me are splendid. They are better pictures in themselves and also show far more attention to the text than any that have yet been submitted to me.' (Letter from J.R.R. Tolkien to Mary Fairburn, 24th May, 1968.) An exchange of letters ensued (between Mary Fairburn and J.R.R. Tolkien) but unfortunately - due to a series of misadventures - they were not published until 2014, in Tolkien: The Official Calendar 2015 by Harper Collins.Borne on the Wind features descriptions of Mary's many and varied occupations, which serve as an historical snapshot from the perspective of an independent, creative woman. These include: teaching at the Forest Gate Franciscan Friary in East London and at the school at MiLS (Masjid-i-Suleiman) in Iran; painting egg tempera frescoes for a wealthy Baron in Italy; and volunteering at one of the infamous Sister Gemma's hostels for London's down-and-outs.'Mary's life story is a lived lesson in art, literature, history, geography and spirituality, brought to life for the reader by her strong feelings about everything, and astonishing retention of detail.' (Paul Tankard, 2020)

The Tolkien Calendar 2011 features 13 paintings by the artist Cor Blok. Cor Blok is the only artist ever to have met JRR Tolkien, and the only artist Tolkien admired enough to purchase some of his work. The paintings are inspired by Tolkien’s classic masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings and were completed during the early 1960s when the young artist was attempting to create a Bayeux tapestry approach to illustrating this monumental book. Many of this paintings included here have never been seen before. This delightful collection of scenes takes the reader on a unique journey through the beauty and drama of Middle-earth. It represents a truly charming addition to the series of official calendars by a gifted artist, and promises to be a memorable calendar for fans.
