'There are important books that focus a full effort on a painful emotion such as depression or panic. Frankly, many troubled people do not directly present with such complaints. Instead, they speak about marital stress, upset about making an oral presentation, dealing with a mean-spirited co-worker, poor nutritional habits, handling uncooperative children or early adolescents, and domestic violence. They want practical guidance about those content areas as well.'- John F Clabby. Health professionals confronted with symptoms of mental and emotional distress often lack knowledge of how to respond to the situations that underlie them, or feel unable to address them in time-limited consultations. This can lead many to either adopt an empathetic listening approach which fails to address underlying causes effectively, or avoid asking their patients and clients about their psychosocial lives at all. Two Minute Talks to Improve Psychological and Behavioral Health takes a unique approach to this common dilemma. It provides concise, pragmatic and matter-of-fact advice which health professionals can use to effectively address the most common underlying causes of distress, such as work, family or relationship difficulties, poor nutritional habits, domestic violence and grief. Although firmly evidence-based, it avoids unnecessary detail to provide a practical reference which can either be read in its entirety or used as a quick reference of clear, accessible advice and strategies that patients can put into use. It is an essential addition to the toolbox of all health professionals who want to provide effective, responsive and empathetic care to their clients in time-limited situations. 'This book will reveal to you talents and results you did not believe possible. It will re-energize your approach to care, and make it fun to talk with and get to know your patients'. - from the Foreword by Kenneth Faistl.

Teachers and Mental Health is my attempt to teach the teachers of children (teachers and parents) some of what I have learned over 40 years of doing therapy, about the rather simple, but apparently poorly understood factors in childhood thinking that go on to create a lot of mental distress by adulthood. Some of the points in this book are: Teachers teach correct speech, but most do not teach accurate speech We end up believing what we say, which is why it is so impor tant to say it accurately We end up acting on what we believe, which is another r eason why it is so impor tant to say it accurately Children have a delusional belief system that sometimes continues throughout adult life A minimum of half of the world is in a delusional state all the time, and 98% of people respond to at least one situation in a delusional fashion one or more times during an average day. Our general understanding of the word responsible, contributes greatly to misunderstandings and poor outcomes in life Failure to understand high and low levels of abstraction in our speech (and thinking) generates mistakes in communication.

The Clinician’s Guide to Alcohol Moderation examines alcohol use around the world and teaches a range of behavioral health care providers how to help clients practice alcohol moderation. Excavating the current treatments available for alcohol moderation, the book offers step-by-step processes of engaging clients and their families, self-assessments, and alcohol moderation tools. In addition to using it in conjunction with Practicing Alcohol Moderation: A Comprehensive Workbook, readers would benefit from the Alcohol Moderation Assessment which predicts who may be able to successfully drink in moderation as well as developing and monitoring an Alcohol Moderation Plan. The text uses recognized alcohol moderation resources throughout the world as well as real-life case studies to address typical clinician, client, and family member questions. It challenges the traditional recommendation that drinkers experiencing problems are “alcoholics.” This guide is a resource for all who overdrink or know people who struggle with their alcohol use. Through its medium, a broad range of health care providers receive a step-by-step process on how to practice alcohol moderation, how to put tools into practice, case examples, and answers to the most commonly asked questions.

The field of health literacy has evolved from early efforts that focused on individuals to its current recognition that health literacy is a multidimensional team and system function. Health literacy includes system demands and complexities as well as individual skills and abilities. While communicating in a health-literate manner is truly important for everyone, it can be especially important for those with mental or behavioral health issues and for the systems and teams that interact with them and treat these individuals. The purpose of the workshop, which was held on July 11, 2018, in Washington, DC, was to explore issues associated with effective communication with individuals with mental or behavioral health issues and to identify ways in which health literacy approaches can facilitate communication. In particular, the workshop aimed to gain a better understanding of how behavioral health and mental health concerns can adversely affect communications between providers and patients and their families. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.
