In het boek 'Vectoren van het recht. Geschiedenis van de Belgische juridische tijdschriften' wordt op zoek gegaan naar de ontstaansredenen, de actoren en de belangrijkste onderwerpen binnen de juridische tijdschriften die sinds de Belgische onafhankelijkheid werden gepubliceerd. De tijdschriften zijn, in de etymologische betekenis van het woord, vectoren van het recht. Zij dragen juridische informatie, zij het rechtspraak, wetgeving of doctrine tot bij de lezer. Tijdschriften zijn evenwel meer dan loutere dragers van informatie, want de redacties streven vaak een bepaald doel na, dat soms zelfs politiek geïnspireerd is. Dat betekent dat de geselecteerde bijdragen vaak niet neutraal gekozen zijn. Op die manier krijgen redacties en auteurs de mogelijkheid om de geesten van het lezerspubliek, waartoe vooral de juridische professionelen behoren, te laten rijpen. Op die manier hebben tijdschriften het potentieel om het recht en de rechtsbeoefening vorm te geven.

This book focuses on the history of the provision of legal aid and legal assistance to the poor in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in eight different countries. It is the first such book to bring together historical work on legal aid in a comparative perspective, and allows readers to analogise and contrast historical narratives about free legal aid across countries. Legal aid developed as a result of industrialisation, urbanization, immigration, the rise of philanthropy, and what were viewed as new legal problems. Closely related, was the growing professionalisation of lawyers and the question of what duties lawyers owed society to perform free work. Yet, legal aid providers in many countries included lay women and men, leading at times to tensions with the bar. Furthermore, legal aid often became deeply politicized, creating dramatic conflicts concerning the rights of the poor to have equal access to justice.

Cooperation across borders requires both knowledge of and understanding of different cultures. This is especially true when it comes to the law. This handbook is the first to comprehensively present selected legal cultures based on a very specific set of structural elements which can be found in all such cultures. Legal cultures are a product of and impacted by certain fundamental and commonly shared ideas on and expectations of the law. In all modern societies these ideas are to a certain degree institutionalized or at least embedded in institutionalized practices.
