We see how Arendt comes to understand that alongside the radical evil she had addressed in earlier analyses of totalitarianism, there exists a more pernicious evil, independent of political ideology, whose execution is limitless when the perpetrator feels no remorse and can forget his acts as soon as they are committed. De denkers die in dit boek worden besproken, trachten elk op eigen wijze recht te doen aan het dynamische karakter van de mens. Als persoon verstaat de mens zichzelf in de steeds veranderlijke relatie tot de ander, waarbij de relatie wordt begrepen langs de lijnen van de existentiële dialoog van Ik en Jij.
