This volume contains nine essays on aspects of the Modern Devotion and its influence. Six studies deal with the spiritual development of important representatives of this late medieval church reform movement: Geert Grote, founder of the movement (two contributions), Jan Brinckerinck, Gerard Zerbolt van Zutphen (two contributions) and Alijt Bake, a female mystic who is not widely known outside the Low Countries. The three remaining studies bear upon the nunnery 'Sanct-Agnetenhuus' in Kampen, the devotion to Liduina, the 'Virgin of Schiedam', from the Middle Ages until the present day and a fifteenth-century ars moriendi here for the first time edited with full commentary. The collection has been edited by staff members of the Titus Brandsma Institute in Nijmegen. The study of the spirituality and history of the Modern Devotion is one of the key topics of interest in this Institute. Sacred spaces in contemporary Western culture are subject to a dynamics in which the traditional forms of ritual are increasingly marginalised and new forms emerge. In Western Europe churches are growing empty, whereas new rituals - for instance those surrounding the victims of violence - are gaining prominence and are mediatized in a variety of ways. The destruction of churches, the rise of increasingly multi-religious urban ritual spaces, the remarkable vitality of places of pilgrimage and war cemeteries and the growing popularity of lieux de memoire in general show the changing landscapes of ritual spaces in modern Western culture.This book aims at describing and analyzing the profound changes and developments that are presently taking place. In the main part of this volume the broad field of ritual spaces is explored in contributions on various modern 'sacred places'. The case studies range from traditional places of religious worship, to the Rothko Chapel in Houston, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., and the Berlin Holocaust Memorial; from the Tor Tre Teste Millenium Church in Rome to the Columbine School Shooting Memorial in Colorado, the memorials for Pim Fortuyn and Theo van Gogh and virtual ritual sites. The question is: Is Jesus Divus Julius? (Is Jesus the historical figure of Divus Julius, the god to which Julius Caesar was elevated?). The iconography of Caesar do not fit our idea of him. In our minds Caesar is a field marshall and a dictator. However, authentic images portray the idea of the clementia Caesaris, a clement Caesar. Jesus' life is congruent to the life of Caesar. Both Julius Caesar and Jesus began their careers in northern countries: Caesar in Gaul, Jesus in Galilee; both cross a fatal river: the Rubicon and the Jordan; both then enter cities; Corfinium and Cafarnaum; Caesar finds Corfinium occupied by a man of Pompey and besieges him, while Jesus finds a man possessed by an impure spirit. There is similarity in structure as well as in place names. People in the stories of Caesar and of Jesus are structurally the same people, even by name and location. Caesar's most famous quotations are found in the gospels in structurally significant places.
