Understanding the psychodynamics of groups has derived from the two separate strands of theory and practice, resulting in two separate disciplines: group psychotherapy and group dynamics. Present-day group psychotherapy derives mainly from psychoanalytic theory and Bion's early experiences with wartime groups, and has been developed from the work of clinicians who practice group psychotherapy as a form of treatment. Group dynamics theory and practice, on the other hand, have arisen largely from the work of social scientists like Kurt Lewin, have been researched in the field and in the laboratory, and have been applied to groups as arenas for leadership training and behavioral change. The Visible and Invisible Group synthesizes these psychoanalytic and group approaches to group life and offers practical guidelines to the group psychotherapist. The authors advocate the simultaneous use of two perspectives: the psychoanalytic perspective for observing the "visible" group of people and their interactions, and a General Systems "Field Theory" perspective for observing the "invisible" group-as-a-whole.

Group Psychotheraphy “Finally, we have a book about group therapy that answers the question, ‘Is there one book that covers the waterfront but is deep enough to provide more than just an overview of models, and can actually help me become a better group therapist?’ This is such a book.” International Journal of Group Psychotherapy “This volume reflects the expansion in the field of psychodynamic group psychotherapy that today incorporates a variety of theoretical perspectives. Leading experts from various countries provide the reader with a clear overview of the different approaches. In addition, there are chapters in this volume that deal with special populations and conditions of treatment. While providing a straightforward introduction to the plethora of material in the field, the volume will also serve as a comprehensive resource for any seasoned group psychotherapist.” Howard D. Kibel, Professor of Psychiatry, New York Medical College and past President of the American Group Psychotherapy Association, USA The Handbook of Group Psychotherapy is a user-friendly guide to conducting group psychotherapy in various settings and with different populations. It has been designed as a resource for new professionals, including graduate students in mental health, as well as more seasoned clinicians planning to integrate group psychotherapy into their work. Bringing together pre-eminent group psychotherapists from different theoretical perspectives and countries, the articles in this volume present their approaches to conducting groups with diverse populations in different settings. Written in straight-forward, jargon-free language, the articles directly speak to the needs of the mental health professional planning to begin a group or to strengthen an existing group. Whether combined with a formal class in group techniques, human relations, or group dynamics, or in an institute training group practitioners, or read as part of one’s own professional development, this work is likely to advance the reader’s clinical competency and strengthen their self-confidence as a leader. Using a personal style and speaking from years of experience, the contributors provide hands-on suggestions as to how a group leader really works. From determining patient or client needs, developing treatment goals, and constructing a group, to handling emergencies, the contributors address the needs of the new group leader. The articles also address issues of diversity and globalism, as well as trauma and resiliency, making this a truly post-9/11 contribution.

The Ethics of Group Psychotherapy provides group psychotherapists with the ethical and legal foundation needed to engage in effective decision-making in their everyday group practices. This text provides readers with a framework for understanding ethical dilemmas through a review of major models of ethical thinking, including principlism, feminism and the ethics of care, and virtue ethics. The authors use this foundation to explore those problems emerging most routinely in group practice, among which are safeguarding members’ personal information, protecting members’ autonomy, and helping members to process differences—particularly those related to privilege and oppression—in a way that furthers interpersonal relations and social justice. Throughout the text, practical tools such as using assessments to aid in member selection and tracking progress and outcome through measurement-based care are offered that bolster the group psychotherapist’s effectiveness in ethical decision-making. Featuring questions for discussion and items to assess the reader’s master of the material, this text will be a valuable tool in classroom and small-group learning.

This book is an up-to-date model based on more than twenty years of work and research with outpatient couples groups. In the text, therapists will find everything they need to conceptualize and develop a successful practice based on group psychotherapy for couples. The book combines tenets of individual personality development, family systems theory, and group psychotherapy theory, blending aspects of the theoretical basis of each in order to build a conceptual framework that incorporates the strengths of all three. Couples Group Psychotherapy also shows clinicians how to use this framework to treat individual clients, how to assess the group’s progress, and how to understand the evolving relationship between participating couples. The model is a cost-effective, time-efficient way to address the needs of diverse communities and uncommon settings, and it harnesses the best of both family and group psychotherapy. Clinicians will come away from this book with a significantly enhanced skillset and a broadened understanding of how to treat couples effectively.

This book offers practitioners, teachers and students of psychotherapy a detailed and comprehensive account of group analysis. It demystifies the workings of analytic groups and looks at the great stretch of issues and tasks confronting the therapist in the practice of group analytic psychotherapy. Each stage in the process is fully discussed: the assessment and preparation of patients for groups, dynamic administration, beginning and ending a group, and the introduction of new members into an established group. A chapter on psychopathology gives a picture of the main psychiatric conditions which the group therapist is likely to encounter, and offers clear guidelines on how to manage them in a group context. An exposition on the group in full flow provides an unusual insight into the processes which constitute the analytic culture, including the analysis of dreams, the art of interpreting, use of the transference and countertransference, and the place of play, humour and metaphor. Difficult and challenging scenarios, such as dropping out, scapegoating, the silent group member, and monopolisation of the group are treated in depth, as are Large Groups, homogeneous groups, groups for children and adolescents, family therapy, groups in non-clinical settings, and the supervision of group therapy. The impingement of the therapist' s own personal issues is also given attention. The authors have flanked their narrative with accounts of the historical, social and cultural origins of group analysis, and a vision of the future provided by the newer strands of thinking in the field. The text is enlivened by colourful vignettes drawn from the authors' own experiences, and by sharply focused dialogues between the two authors, designed to illustrate their contrasting and complementary perspectives. The book represents a distillation of the authors' long experience in the field of group analytic practice and training in the United Kingdom and internationally.

A growing number of art therapists are also trained in group analytic psychotherapy. This book explores the new theories and models for practice arising from the merging of these two disciplines. Contributors ask whether a model can be applied universally to art therapy group work with diverse client groups. They present in-depth case studies looking at work with the following:- * children * drug and alcohol abusers * forensic patients * patients on acute psychiatric wards * the cognitively-impaired elderly * institutionalised patients moving into the community A common theme which emerges is that the physical use of art materials and the space of the art room offer a possibility for communication of feelings which is not possible in purely verbal groups. This allows clients who would not normally be considered for group therapy to benefit from a psychodynamic group process.

Systems-Centered Therapy (SCT) is an innovative approach to psychotherapy that synthesizes a finely-tuned awareness of the defensive roles of anxiety and depression, with an analysis of the phases of group development. This volume introduces the author's theory of living human systems and explicitly maps out its use in a structured treatment model applicable to work with any population. In rich conceptual detail, the volume presents SCT as a powerful modality that enables clients to safely "sit on the edge of the unknown" and transform their ways of relating to themselves and each other. It will be received with interest by all practitioners and trainees in group and individual psychotherapy.
