Planning and management for tourism growth is becoming essential in the context of sustainable development. Particularly so since many tourist destinations are facing severe pressures from tourist flows and activities. Such pressures are evidenced in terms of dysfunctions (congestion, environmental degradation, etc) which ultimately affect the attraction and competitiveness of tourism destinations. The development of tourism should be considered in accordance with sustainability principles. In this context respecting the capacity of the local system to sustain growth becomes a key challenge. This book examines the use of various tools to define, measure and evaluate tourism carrying capacity (TCC) - a tool aiming to impose limits for entering certain tourist destinations or using certain activities. Drawing on case studies from France, Spain, Italy, Greece, the UK, the Netherlands, Ireland, Belgium, Austria, Germany and Finland, it presents practical experiences of implementing TCC in various tourist destinations (i.e. historic towns, coastal zones, islands, etc). It draws conclusions regarding the measurement and implementation of TCC assessment and provides further guidelines towards a comprehensive methodological framework for assessing tourism sustainability in the future.

Nature-based tourism is an important component of the tourism industry and has experienced significant growth during recent years. Nature-based tourism attractions (NBTA) can provide substantial economic gains to both host communities and tourism businesses. To sustain the growth of NBTA and maintain its associated benefits, it is important to ensure that the visitors are satisfied with the experiences provided. Despite the importance of delivering visitor satisfaction for NBTA, there is scant literature available on visitor satisfaction with NBTA. The aims of this study is to identify the factors that influence visitor satisfaction with NBTA. The study also analyzes the relationship between NBTA, overall satisfaction and visitor loyalty. Visitor satisfaction was measured using a questionnaire which adopted the perceive-performance theory. The study area for this study was seven NBTA where convenience sampling was used for the selection of the attractions. Data was collected from the on-site survey method with a sample size of 600 NBTA visitors. Statistical analyses were used and hypotheses were tested. Based upon the results of this study, recommendations were made.

In 1982, when my book The Social Psychology of Tourist Behaviour was published, it was almost possible to review academic research on tourism. In 1988, in a book of similar scale, such a review is almost impossible. The aim of the present volume is, therefore, to outline a body of work which adopts a consistent theme and method in exploring the topic of tourism. The approach is one of emphasising tourists' reactions and behaviours. The work is both behavioural and cognitive, and stems principally from applied traditions in social and environmental psychology. The examples of tourist studies tend to be Australian, British, and North American, principally because work elsewhere in psychological studies of tourists is less well organised. The nationality of the researchers should not, however, confine the application of the research findings, since while the examples may be specific the results are applicable in Brisbane, Bognor or Bogota. The book is intended not just for academic tourism researchers but also for all psychologists, so that they might note an understudied phenomenon within their discipline. For leisure researchers it is hoped that it will provide an opportunity for them to see developments parallel to their own research efforts in studying recreational behaviour. Is it also a volume for tourism managers and executives? In part it is, and the sections such readers might find of particular interest are Chapters 1, 2, 3 and 9.

Impact Assessment In Tourism Economics written by Álvaro Matias and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-30 with Business & Economics categories.

This book presents a series of studies on the socio-economic impacts of tourism, with a special focus on the determinants of tourism competitiveness at the destination level. The authors offer a systematic overview of this important issue, presenting relevant empirical studies from different parts of the world, based on modern theoretical approaches and adequate analysis tools, in the context of their policy or managerial implications. The first part of the book discusses the analysis and assessment of quantitative tourism impacts on local economies, while the second part focuses on non-material aspects of tourism development, in particular those related to the role of innovation and human resources. The final section highlights the different dynamics often observed in tourism destinations arising from the interaction between tourists and local communities.
