Edward Schillebeeckx (1914-2009) is a key figure in modern theology. As one of the editors of Concilium (with Karl Rahner) he was the advisor of the Dutch bishops at the Second Vatican Council and has been said to have influenced much of the content of the Council's documents. Later he had to defend his theology before the Magisterium as his orthodoxy was doubted. As a theologian, he always sought to balance between tradition and renewal. How can we theologically reflect on universality in a world that increasingly focuses on particularities and differences? Marijn de Jong argues that the question of universality calls for a reconceptualized form of metaphysical theology, which he finds in the work of Karl Rahner and Edward Schillebeeckx.
