Gedankenfreiheit und die W rde des Menschen waren ihm dabei besonders wichtig. Schon in jungen Jahren fiel Voltaire durch seine satirischen Schriften auf und wurde mehrfach in die Bastille gesperrt, bis er schlie lich nach England ins Exil ging, wo er vor allem vom Philosoph Locke stark beeinflusst wurde. Obwohl Voltaire eine zentrale Figur des 18. Jahrhunderts darstellt und sein Ruhm lange anhielt, werden seine Werke kaum noch gespielt oder gelesen. Candide ou l'Optimisme ist jedoch eine Ausnahme. Trotz Zensur und drohender Strafen kritisiert Voltaire in seinem Werk auf ironische und zum Teil am sante Weise die Missst nde der damaligen Zeit.

Prétendument traduit du docteur Ralph (qui, en réalité, n'est que le pseudonyme utilisé par Voltaire), avec les additions qu'on a trouvées dans la poche du docteur, cette oeuvre, ironique dès les premières lignes, ne laisse aucun doute sur l'origine de l'auteur, qui ne pouvait qu'être du parti des philosophes.
