‘De religie’ geeft aanleiding tot vele, vaak heftige debatten in academische en minder academische kringen. Bij nader toezien gaan die debatten meestal over de sociale constructie die de religieuze beleving bevordert of verzwakt en niet over de kern van de religie, de religieuze beleving. Ze gaan over de omstandigheden die de participatie aan de religieuze gemeenschap en cultuur ondersteunen of hinderen, die haar geloofwaardigheid ondermijnen of bevestigen. Dit werk wil een aantal van die debatten verhelderen met behulp van een sociologische zienswijze en de beschikbare empirische gegevens. Daarmee is alvast één thema aangestipt dat herhaaldelijk zal weerkeren: het onderscheid tussen de theologische (en de filosofische) zienswijze en de sociologische (en de menswetenschappelijke). De stelling van de auteur luidt dat in debatten over religie de theologisch/filosofische zienswijze, zij het vaak in haar gevulgariseerde vorm, te veel aan bod komt en de sociologische te weinig. Dit geldt, paradoxaal genoeg, zowel voor de vrienden als voor de vijanden van de religie. Dat is begrijpelijk omdat levensbeschouwelijke debatten nu eenmaal ‘heet’ zijn en meer aantrekkingskracht hebben dan menswetenschappelijke debatten die veeleer ‘koel’ zijn.
