During the past decade, a dramatic increase in research and clinical interest has risen in child abuse and neglect. This recent growth in awareness isdue at leastpartly to thealarmingstatisticsdocumentingthe incidence of child maltreatment. Almost one million children are re ported to be abused and neglected each year, and many experts believe that this figure underestimates the true incidence. Indeed, recentsurveys suggest that almost 1. 5 million children are the targets of domestic vio lence every year. A significantproportion of these children die as a func tion of this maltreatment, whereas theremaindersuffera variety ofshort and long-term deleterious medicaland psychosocial consequences. Child maltreatment is a universal problem that has precipitated a mobilization of effort from a variety of disciplines, including psychology, medicine, psychiatry, social work, sociology, and criminology. Particular attention has been directed toward the prevention and treatment of childabuse and neglect. Such endeavors require the screen ing of large groups in order to identify families that are at high-risk for engaging in such behavior. Delineating those characteristics that differ entiate high- from low-risk families and children is one of the obvious priorities for researchers and clinicians in the future. This book, there fore, carefully considers the status of research on risk factors of abuse and neglect in children. Adduced data undoubtedly will have practical value for subsequent intervention efforts.

I wrote this book after hearing children recount child abuse stories that happened to them when they were young. I was a middle school counselor for years my students were 11-14 years old. The abuse they were recounting happened usually from 2-8 years old. I wrote Some Parts are NOT for Sharing on the level of an infant to an 8-year-old. This book will frighten no one. People write awful reviews and say, "This book does not say anything!" This is the point; this book is the tip of the iceberg it is not the entire iceberg. If it were it would not be for small children. The point of this book is to educate your children about child abuse before some other "loving family member" does. Most children are not harmed by strangers. In all of my years of counseling not one child reported that they were harmed by a stranger. Mom's boyfriend was the biggest perpetrator followed closely by stepfather. Knowledge is power please, please, protect your children. To read the book before you buy it visit juliefederico.com Your body is a no trespassing zone. Your body is sacred, your body is your own. Many parts of our bodies we share with others. It feels good to share these parts of our bodies. Hugs are wonderful, holding hands can make your day more special. We share all of the parts of our bodies except the private areas. The private areas are any area a swimsuit covers. This book will teach you what to do if some touches you in the no trespassing zone or the private areas. (page break) Some adults, teenagers, and children do not use good judgement and unfortunately touch other children in these places. They may continue to touch you in the no trespassing zone even after you have told them to stop. It does not feel right when someone touches you in these areas. Trust this feeling, it is not right. It is not okay. It is not your fault that they are deciding to use bad judgement. It is not your fault that they are deciding to use bad judgement. The person touching you may make you feel like it is your fault and they will definitely tell you, "Not to tell anyone, this is our secret." This is a lie, this is a huge lie. No trespassing zone touching should always be reported. If you do not report it, it will not stop. Reporting is not calling the local news. Reporting it is telling a trusted adult. A trusted adult can be; a parent, grandparent, neighbor, teacher, school bus driver, doctor, friend, step-sister or anyone that you trust. The most important thing to remember when telling the story is to repeat the story to someone else if the person you tell does not get help. If they get help they will be calling law enforcement or human services. This book is also available in Spanish. Julie Federico Children's Services Author www.juliefederico.com

`This book is a practical and supportive guide for the professionals facing this traumatic subject. [It] is easily readable' - Journal of Child and Adolescent Mental Health `Therapeutic Work With Sexually Abused Children locates the practice experience of the authors within a rigorous theoretical framework and is a readable and useable guide to the complexities of helping children and adolescents who have suffered the trauma of sexual abuse' - Youth & Policy `It is refreshing to find child therapists ready to engage with sexually abused children by incorporating trauma theory and research, addressing child protection and seeing themselves as part of a team that includes the carers. The authors provide an overview of phases of treatment, theoretical considerations and essential skills. They emphasize the importance of relationship and explore its impact on the therapist. Their approach is creative and child-centered. Case vignettes, poems and exercises promote empathy with the child's perspective. There is a useful chapter on cultural issues and the needs of children in alternative care... this is an excellent primer for the child's helping network' - Community Care `This is an excellent book for workers seeking to respond more effectively to child victims of abuse' - David Pearson, Caring Magazine Therapeutic Work with Sexually Abused Children is a creative and practical guide for professionals working directly with those who have suffered sexual abuse and for their carers. The trauma of sexual abuse experienced in childhood can be severe and enduring. Therapeutic support is offered to help both the child and the family cope with psychological or emotional difficulties both currently and in later life. Therapists must be able to respond effectively to the child victim in a sensitive and timely way which prioritizes the needs of each child. Drawing on their experience as practitioners, the authors explore the reactions which children commonly experience following abuse and examine the tasks of the therapist in responding to them. This book explores the counselling of children who have been abused rather than adult survivors of child abuse. The book will benefit from the combined experiences of one US author and one UK author.

of older children, adults, and the family unit as a whole. These moral evaluations are, in turn, influenced by such external contingencies as popula tion demography, social and economic factors, subsistence strategies, house hold composition, and by cultural ideas concerning the nature of infancy and childhood, definitions of personhood, and beliefs about the soul and its immortality. MOTHER LOVE AND CHILD DEATH Of all the many factors that endanger the lives of young children, by far the most difficult to examine with any degree of dispassionate objectivity is the quality of parenting. Historians and social scientists, no less than the public at large, are influenced by old cultural myths about childhood inno cence and mother love as well as their opposites. The terrible power and significance attributed to maternal behavior (in particular) is a commonsense perception based on the observation that the human infant (specialized as it is for prematurity and prolonged dependency) simply cannot survive for very long without considerable maternal love and care. The infant's life depends, to a very great extent, on the good will of others, but most especially, of course, that of the mother. Consequently, it has been the fate of mothers throughout history to appear in strange and distorted forms. They may appear as larger than life or as invisible; as all-powerful and destructive; or as helpless and angelic. Myths of the maternal instinct compete, historically, witli -myths of a universal infanticidal impulse.
