In 1971 publiceerde psychiater, psychotherapeut en schrijver Jan Foudraine een boek dat hem blijvende bekendheid zou opleveren: Wie is van hout... Een gang door de psychiatrie. Het boek werd een bestseller, is in zeven talen vertaald en heeft vijftig jaar later nog altijd niets aan urgentie ingeboet. Deze speciale jubileum-editie is van een nieuw voorwoord voorzien door Paul Verhaeghe, doctor in de klinische psychologie en hoogleraar aan de Universiteit Gent. Foudraine hield in zijn boek een hartstochtelijk pleidooi voor een humanere omgang met mensen met geestelijke problemen, zij lieten volgens hem zien wat er allemaal mis was in de maatschappij. In zijn eigen woorden: ‘Ik kwam vooral in verzet tegen het plakken van etiketten op mensen-met-moeilijkheden en kreeg een regelrechte afkeer van het botaniseren van “geestesziekte beelden”. Ik meende dat termen als “neurotisch”, “psychotisch”,“schizofreen”, “psychopatisch”, “manisch-depressief ” en god-weet welke etiketten nog meer op mensen geplakt werden in ieder geval niets te maken hadden met een mysterieuze ziekte en evenmin met iets erfelijks.’

Anti-psychiatry' is a movement more sloganized than analysed. Until now it has been associated in the English-speaking world primarily with R.D. Laing and a coterie of his associates, and a radical critique not just of psychiatric hospitalization but of the very premises of psychiatry itself and the basic institutions of society, especially the family. But are these notions accurate, or rather distorted images, created by Laing himself or by the media? In this book, which has emerged out of an Anglo-Dutch conference held in June 1997, the realities of critical psychiatry are explored, using comparisons and contrasts between the British and the Dutch experiences as a probe. There were, it turns out, various distinct anti-psychiatries - indeed, hardly anybody actually used that label about themselves - and they played a role in the reform no less than the rejection of regular psychiatry.

The author studied the culture, particularly social life, of a tribal society of the Kabar plain in the inland area of the Kepala Burung (Vogelkop) in Irian Jaya. The focus was on constants, variants, and changes in the field of kinship and religion. Ch. 1 gives a historical survey of the Kabar plain. Ch. 2 pays attention to environment and demographic data. To determine the influences of processes of state formation in the East Indonesian archipelago on theKebar, chapters 3 and 4 look at the intra- and intertribal (kinship) relations, including changes occurring in them, and the Kebar man- and worldview. Ch. 5 discusses the connection between social historical and ecological influences on the culture of the Kebar, in particular in the fields of kinship and religion.
