The outlook for women with breast cancer has improved in recent years. Due to the combination of improved treatments and the benefits of mammography screening, breast cancer mortality has decreased steadily since 1989. Yet breast cancer remains a major problem, second only to lung cancer as a leading cause of death from cancer for women. To date, no means to prevent breast cancer has been discovered and experience has shown that treatments are most effective when a cancer is detected early, before it has spread to other tissues. These two facts suggest that the most effective way to continue reducing the death toll from breast cancer is improved early detection and diagnosis. Building on the 2001 report Mammography and Beyond, this new book not only examines ways to improve implementation and use of new and current breast cancer detection technologies but also evaluates the need to develop tools that identify women who would benefit most from early detection screening. Saving Women's Lives: Strategies for Improving Breast Cancer Detection and Diagnosis encourages more research that integrates the development, validation, and analysis of the types of technologies in clinical practice that promote improved risk identification techniques. In this way, methods and technologies that improve detection and diagnosis can be more effectively developed and implemented.

“I will always and forever feel I have a 'hole' in my life where my mother once existed.” “I think, when you have to think about the fact you might have to take care of your parents someday and juggle kids at the same time…It's a scary proposition.” “We had open communication during and before the breast cancer. But then after the breast cancer, I was often afraid to bring things up, in trying to protect Mom.” This insightful book tells the stories of women whose mothers had breast cancer. It uses their own voices to express the common fears and expectations of daughters in the periods before and during their mothers' illnesses, involving genetic risks, death and dying, and changes in their relationships. The case studies, tables and figures, and two appendices will benefit health professionals and counselors, while the poignant narratives will help mothers and daughters better understand their experiences with breast cancer. “I was kind of surprised to be alive and free of cancer at age 42, when at this point my mother was crippled by metastases. When I get to be 43—the age at which my mother died, or maybe when I get to 44—it's like, 'what do I do?' I have this life that I didn't expect to have.” Breast Cancer: Daughters Tell Their Stories presents the results of a qualitative, grounded theory study of breast cancer survivors, providing in-depth information about an aspect of breast cancer that has been previously overlooked. The book examines the daughters' experiences through four phases—the period prior to mother's illness, the period during mother's illness and treatment, the period following mother's death (if mother dies), and the long-term impact. From this study, recommendations are compiled for providing or improving services for tomorrow's daughters. “The radical mastectomy left her scarred and disfigured below her nightgown. It was bruised and nasty looking. That was kind of scary. I think that has terrified me since. Sometimes I'll have pains in my left breast and that's what I visualize. It's terrifying.” “I'm not really obsessed about dying of cancer. I'm more along the line of, 'If this is going to happen to me, and there's a chance it's going to, I'm gonna survive. I'm not going to die from it.” From an empathetic perspective, this book reveals how many daughters react to and deal with their mothers' diagnoses, depending on their age and family situation at the time of their mothers' illnesses. It shows how daughters can gain a more accurate idea of their level of risk by providing educational materials and developing new strategies for communication. It also helps breast cancer survivors see how their illnesses can shape their daughters' future outlook, offering new inspiration for resolving and preventing family crises.

Did you know that there are different types of breast cancer? Did you know that you can have breast cancer without having a lump? Did you know that all breast cancers do not show up on a mammogram or an ultrasound? Have you ever heard of Inflammatory Breast Cancer? Nina Anderson, the author of this book, would have answered no to all of the above questions. If she had known some of these facts, she would have been more suspicious about her symptoms. She was a very health conscious individual. She had a mammogram and Pap test every year and did monthly self breast examinations. When she started having swelling, an inverted nipple, redness and a fever in her right breast, the last thing she ever suspected was that she might have breast cancer. She had hardly ever been sick in her entire life until she was diagnosed with this very aggressive and lethal form of breast cancer known as Inflammatory Breast Cancer. This book is the story of her dreadful ordeal and miraculous survival. Nina considers the sequence of events that led to her early diagnosis a miracle that saved her life. Many women do not survive IBC because there is no lump involved and it cannot be detected by a mammogram or ultrasound. The only way to get a conclusive diagnosis is to perform a surgical biopsy of the breast and skin tissue. The symptoms of Inflammatory Breast Cancer (abbreviated as IBC) are similar to a breast infection known as mastitis. Most women are diagnosed with mastitis or cellulitis and treated with antibiotics for two to three months. By that time IBC is so aggressive that it has spread to other organs of the body and is in the final stage of breast cancer. The details of her diagnosis and the eleven months of treatment that followed are chronicled in this amazing story of survival. During her very first chemotherapy treatment, an incident involving a bumble bee instilled a hope in Nina that would help to sustain her during the long, grueling months of treatment. She shares her experience in an effort to inform every woman about the symptoms of Inflammatory Breast Cancer and how to cope and fight the disease. It is her hope that this book will save lives. No woman should have to suffer the consequences of this disease because she has never heard of IBC or didnt know about the symptoms. Nina also wants to give every woman who is diagnosed with IBC the hope that YOU CAN SURVIVE. Here is an excerpt from her book: CHAPTER ONE THE MONTH OF APRIL RARE ENCOUNTERS OF THE INTIMATE KIND You know how when you get past fifty years old, those intimate moments with your spouse are few and far between? Well thats kind of how it was with us. But it was one of those rare evenings when things just seemed to fall in place and it happened! Afterwards my husband, Richard, said that something wasnt right with my right breast. I told him that I had already noticed it and that I thought I might have mastitis. He had no idea what that was, so I explained that it was an infection of the mammary glands which you can sometimes have when you are breastfeeding. I had some redness and swelling and the breast had felt kind of feverish for about a week or two. I told him I guess I would have to make an appointment with my gynecologist and get some antibiotics. It was kind of aggravating to be going through menopause and have to deal with a breast infection. I promised that as much as I hated going to the doctor, I would make an appointment the next day. When I woke up the next morning, the breast was so swollen that the nipple had inverted. I remembered when I was breast feeding that this same thing had happened when it was feeding time. The breasts would fill with milk and the right nipple would become an inny instead of an outy. I would have to use a nipple shield in order for the baby to be able to n

The Unplanned Journey relates the adventures of my walk on the Cancer road. It stresses the lessons that Cancer taught me. It tells the reader about my fears and my struggles in dealing with Cancer - the acceptance of having the disease, the surgeries, and its treatments. This book is written in an effort to assure any woman or man with Cancer that there is an end to the long journey. My readers should be assured that they are not alone. Today most Cancers are curable if they can be found early. Happiness and normal life will return again at the end of the journey. Book Review: Breast Cancer The Unplanned Journey Lessons Learned By Beverly Stacy Dittmer Reviewed by Mary Ann Noonan Breast Cancer The Unplanned Journey Lessons Learned, is the very personal journal of Beverly Stacy Dittmer's passage from finding a lump in her breast, through her anxious wait for the confirmed diagnosis of breast cancer that every woman dreads to hear, through her one step at a time trek from surgery through treatment and complications, and, finally, to a realization that life goes on and can become normal again. Beverly as a daughter, a sister, a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a friend, and a professional woman shares critical, yet sensitive, information about her diagnosis of breast cancer and its treatment. She makes it quite clear in the copyright page that "the medical statements in this book are only what I understood and are not to be taken as true medical facts," continuing that her knowledge about breast cancer was obtained in years 2003 and 2004. In addition, she includes a personal touch to her 222 page manuscript describing many relationships and human interest stories about life with her husband, her family, her friends, her personal activities, and travels. The reader follows Beverly as she relates her cancer journey one step at a time-the good times and the bad. In a detailed, remarkably sensitive, casual, almost speaking to the audience style, Dittmer writes about everyday life while facing a life threatening condition. She shares words of advice and reminders about living each day with confidence and courage that there is light at the end of the tunnel while including "lessons learned" in the last four pages. Encouragement is granted to the reader by the author's constructive council that "there is an end to this long journey." Through her direct and candid accounts it was obvious that she was not alone in this walk. As a professional nurse practitioner and retired professor of nursing, reading Beverly Stacy Dittmer's personal story reinforces the importance for health care providers to listen and to be present to all individuals for whom they care. For the person with a life-threatening illness, this read will provide a source of strength and encouragement. For the student of nursing and medicine it is a must read.
