Control In The Police Organization written by Maurice Punch and has been published by MIT Press (MA) this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1983 with Organizational behavior categories.

Contributors to this anthology examine how the police go about policing themselves in the real world. Police officers enjoy considerable autonomy and discretion, which makes strict accountability and close supervision the exception. In the lower ranks, mutual back-scratching, the code of silence, and the falsified report, can be used to cover up work avoidance, short-cut methods, illicit violence, and pay-offs. In spite of this, there are clearly constraints on police behavior in the form of both written and unwritten institutional controls. This book probes the various sources of organizational control, including: formal internal disciplinary regulations, the norms and values of the occupational culture, external legal constraints, and the overriding need to prevent scandals. The authors also suggest improving organizational control through managerial reforms to promote not just proficient bureaucrats, but leaders who possess insight into, and empathy for, the inescapable dilemmas of the men and women on the front lines.

Punch needle embroidery is a traditional technique that came out of the US in the 19th century and is similar to rug hooking. A strand of thread is pushed through loose-weave fabric, making a ‘loop’ on the other side. Repeated several times, this simple action creates a stunning, decorative, tactile design. Starting with the key materials and equipment you'll need, as well as the basic punch-needle stitches and techniques, go straight into making the 20 charming projects inside – including flower-adorned pillows, pretty wall hangings and stylish bags! All the projects are accompanied by beautiful photographs, diagrams to help you work out what to stitch first, and templates for you to trace off for quick-and-easy needle punching.

If he successfully completes the turnaround of his companies they can be sold for the maximum return: if he fails they will be closed down. Either way Alex and his team will be out of work. It looks like lose-lose, both for Alex and for his team. And as if he doesn’t have enough to deal with, his two children have become teenagers. As Alex grapples with problems at work and at home, we begin to understand the full scope of Eli Goldratt’s powerful techniques. Edible Insects written by Arnold van Huis and has been published by Bright Sparks this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013 with Conservation of natural resources categories.

Edible insects have always been a part of human diets, but in some societies there remains a degree of disdain and disgust for their consumption. Although the majority of consumed insects are gathered in forest habitats, mass-rearing systems are being developed in many countries. Insects offer a significant opportunity to merge traditional knowledge and modern science to improve human food security worldwide. This publication describes the contribution of insects to food security and examines future prospects for raising insects at a commercial scale to improve food and feed production, diversify diets, and support livelihoods in both developing and developed countries. It shows the many traditional and potential new uses of insects for direct human consumption and the opportunities for and constraints to farming them for food and feed. It examines the body of research on issues such as insect nutrition and food safety, the use of insects as animal feed, and the processing and preservation of insects and their products. It highlights the need to develop a regulatory framework to govern the use of insects for food security. And it presents case studies and examples from around the world. Edible insects are a promising alternative to the conventional production of meat, either for direct human consumption or for indirect use as feedstock. To fully realise this potential, much work needs to be done by a wide range of stakeholders. This publication will boost awareness of the many valuable roles that insects play in sustaining nature and human life, and it will stimulate debate on the expansion of the use of insects as food and feed.

The Social Construction Of Technological Systems Anniversary Edition written by Wiebe E. Bijker and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-05-18 with Technology & Engineering categories.

An anniversary edition of an influential book that introduced a groundbreaking approach to the study of science, technology, and society. This pioneering book, first published in 1987, launched the new field of social studies of technology. It introduced a method of inquiry—social construction of technology, or SCOT—that became a key part of the wider discipline of science and technology studies. The book helped the MIT Press shape its STS list and inspired the Inside Technology series. The thirteen essays in the book tell stories about such varied technologies as thirteenth-century galleys, eighteenth-century cooking stoves, and twentieth-century missile systems. Taken together, they affirm the fruitfulness of an approach to the study of technology that gives equal weight to technical, social, economic, and political questions, and they demonstrate the illuminating effects of the integration of empirics and theory. The approaches in this volume—collectively called SCOT (after the volume's title) have since broadened their scope, and twenty-five years after the publication of this book, it is difficult to think of a technology that has not been studied from a SCOT perspective and impossible to think of a technology that cannot be studied that way.
