Military drones and space drones had evolved to become the new air force and space force. Highly advanced drones had taken over the skies and outer space, not only to fight wars, but they were also used for tasks such as security and traffic control over non-warring territories. Smart drones, equipped and embedded with the latest in artificial intelligence and battery technologies, were accorded prime importance in commercial, military, medical, and civilian applications. For military and drone buffs, including artificial intelligence savants, the year was 137 AOD, or Year 137 in the Age of Drones. It was 137 years after two historical milestones had altered the world, encompassing both the developed and the developing countries. The first historical milestone had been the worldwide propagation of DAPI, or Drone Application Programming Interface, which enabled both humans and drones to reliably communicate and seamlessly interact between them. DAPI was widely accepted and eventually became the global standard because of its open source DRONAL programming language, or short for: Direct Resonance Optical Neural Artificial Language. Another historical milestone had been the enactment and passage into law of The Drones Act by the United States Congress more than a century ago. The Drones Act was considered a landmark piece of legislation allowing drones embedded with cutting-edge machine learning and state-of-the-art artificial intelligence to engage in commercial activities, including leasing land and real properties, among others. A consortium composed of the private sector and the military establishment had put up several drone ports throughout the country decades ago. Each drone port had a research facility as an adjunct. Included in The Drones Act was the issuance of a special digital currency for sentient and intelligent drones called the Drone Crypto Coin.

In the Long War, formerly called the Global War on Terror, the armed forces of the United States have utilized unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) extensively to support combat, security, and stability operations. The concept of unmanned flight is nothing new to the military. Experiments with pilotless aircraft began at the end of World War I. The historical development of these aircraft and the Army's long use of aerial platforms for reconnaissance provide valuable insight into the future possibilities and potential pitfalls of UAVs.Mr. John Blom's study describes the way that aircraft have been integrated into ground units since World War I. Mr. Blom traces this integration through World War II and the creation of an independent Air Force. In the ninety years since World War I, the quantity of aircraft organic to ground units has constantly expanded. In this period, many of the same debates between the Army and Air Force that continue today over UAVs first appeared.This study addresses past and current systems, and does not address systems under development. The technological development of UAVs possesses as deep a history as the Army's use of aircraft for aerial reconnaissance. This book explores the implications of drone warfare for the legitimacy of global order. The literature on drone warfare has evolved from studying the proliferation of drones, to measuring their effectiveness, to exploring their legal, moral, and ethical impacts. These "three waves" of scholarship do not, however, address the implications of drone warfare for global order. This book fills the gap by contributing to a "fourth wave" of literature concerned with the trade-offs imposed by drone warfare for global order. The book draws on the "English School" of International Relations Theory, which is premised on the existence of a society of states bounded by common norms, values, and institutions, to argue that drone warfare imposes contradictions on the structural and normative pillars of global order. These consist of the structure of international society and diffusion of military capabilities, as well as the sovereign equality of states and laws of armed conflict. The book presents a typology of contradictions imposed by drone warfare within and across these axes that threaten the legitimacy of global order. This framework also suggests a confounding consequence of drone warfare that scholars have not hitherto explored rigorously: drone warfare can sometimes strengthen global order. The volume concludes by proposing a research agenda to reconcile the complex and often counter-intuitive impacts of drone warfare for global order. This book will be of considerable interest to students of security studies, global governance, and International Relations.
