Winner of the 2007 Critics' Choice Award presented by the American Educational Studies Association Until now, much of what has been written about Mexican American educational history has focused on California and Texas, while Colorado's story has remained largely untold. Rubén Donato recounts the social and educational history of Mexicans and Hispanos (descendents of Spanish troops who came to the region in the late 1500s) in Colorado from 1920 to 1960. He examines both groups' experiences in sugar beet towns, the experiences of Hispanos in Anglo American–controlled towns, and the Hispano experience in a historically Hispano-controlled town. Donato argues that whoever possessed power at the local level determined who ran the schools, who administered them, who taught in them, who succeeded in them, and what sorts of social and academic environments were created.

At the end of the Mexican Revolution in 1920, Mexico's large, rebellious army dominated national politics. By the 1940s, Mexico's Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) was led by a civilian president and claimed to have depoliticized the army and achieved the bloodless pacification of the Mexican countryside through land reform, schooling, and indigenismo. However, historian Thomas Rath argues, Mexico's celebrated demilitarization was more protracted, conflict-ridden, and incomplete than most accounts assume. Civilian governments deployed troops as a police force, often aimed at political suppression, while officers meddled in provincial politics, engaged in corruption, and crafted official history, all against a backdrop of sustained popular protest and debate. Using newly available materials from military, intelligence, and diplomatic archives, Rath weaves together an analysis of national and regional politics, military education, conscription, veteran policy, and popular protest. In doing so, he challenges dominant interpretations of successful, top-down demilitarization and questions the image of the post-1940 PRI regime as strong, stable, and legitimate. Rath also shows how the army's suppression of students and guerrillas in the 1960s and 1970s and the more recent militarization of policing have long roots in Mexican history.

Anti Foreign Imagery In American Pulps And Comic Books 1920 1960 written by Nathan Vernon Madison and has been published by McFarland this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-02-18 with Literary Criticism categories.

In this thorough history, the author demonstrates, via the popular literature (primarily pulp magazines and comic books) of the 1920s to about 1960, that the stories therein drew their definitions of heroism and villainy from an overarching, nativist fear of outsiders that had existed before World War I but intensified afterwards. These depictions were transferred to America's "new" enemies, both following U.S. entry into the Second World War and during the early stages of the Cold War. Anti-foreign narratives showed a growing emphasis on ideological, as opposed to racial or ethnic, differences--and early signs of the coming "multiculturalism"--indicating that pure racism was not the sole reason for nativist rhetoric in popular literature. The process of change in America's nativist sentiments, so virulent after the First World War, are revealed by the popular, inexpensive escapism of the time, pulp magazines and comic books.

"... the book is not only a study of the history of sociological research methods in America, but it is an excellent piece of sociological research itself." Shulamit Reinhart, Journal for the History of the Behavioral Sciences. "This is an outstanding contribution to our understanding of what really went on in US universities at a key point in the development of sociology and an almighty sideswipe at a great deal of the discipline's subordination to theorists from within and from without the subject. Sociologists should not just order this book for the library and leave it to gather dust. Buy it, study it and reflect on the state of their subject." Frank Webster, Times Higher Education Supplement. "this study is "without doubt" an important contribution to our understanding of an area of sociology colonized in ways that can serve as much to obscure, as to enlighten, our understanding of its development ..." Tim May, History of the Human Sciences. "The bibliography of this book will in itself provide an excellent resource for sociological historians, methodologists and practitioners alike... in the ultimate analysis, the key finding of this important book lies in the evidence it provides of the continuing need for intellectual justification of changing practices, and of the significance of critical analysis for methodological advance in a discipline, which ... is shown to be cumulative in the best sense of the word." Stine Lyon, Reviewing Sociology.

War Occupation And Creativity written by Marlene J. Mayo and has been published by University of Hawaii Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-05-01 with History categories.

This collection of essays, based on international collaboration by scholars in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and the United States, is the first systematic, interdisciplinary attempt to address the social, political, and spiritual significance of the modern arts both in Japan and its empire between 1920 and 1960. These forty years, punctuated by war, occupation, and reconstruction, were turbulent and brutal, but also important and even productive for the arts. The volume takes a trans-war (rather than an inter-war) approach, beginning with the cultural politics of painting, poetry, and fiction in Japanese-occupied Korea and Taiwan following World War I. The narrative continues with the impact of Japan's war in China and the Pacific War on major Japanese novelists, playwrights, painters, and filmmakers, before moving on to the final stage, Japan's defeat and initial recovery. During the Allied Occupation of Japan and in its aftermath, Japanese artists both confronted and dismissed the question of war responsibility by preserving, reviving, or reinventing the political cartoon, Kabuki drama, literature of the body, and the aesthetics of decadence. Contributors: Haruko Taya Cook, Kyoko Hirano, Youngna Kim (Kim Youngna), H. Eleanor Kerkham, David R. McCann, Marlene J. Mayo, J. Thomas Rimer, Mark H. Sandler, Rinjiro Sodei, Wang Hsui-hsiung (Wang Xiuxiong), Alan Wolfe, Angelina C. Yee.
