Handbook Of Alien Species In Europe written by Delivering Alien Invasive Species and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-11-14 with Science categories.

Biological invasions by alien (non-native) species are widely recognized as a significant component of human-caused global environmental change and the second most important cause of biodiversity decline. Alien species threaten many European ecosystems and have serious environmental, economic and health impacts. The DAISIE (Delivering Alien Invasive Species Inventories for Europe) project has now brought together all available information on alien species in Europe (terrestrial, aquatic and marine) and from all taxa (fungi, plants, animals). Thus for the first time, an overview and assessment of biological invasions in the Pan-European region is finally possible. The Handbook of Alien Species in Europe summarises the major findings of this groundbreaking research and addresses the invasion trends, pathways, and both economic as well as ecological impact for eight major taxonomic groups. Approximately 11.000 alien species recorded in Europe are listed, and fact sheets for 100 of the most invasive alien species are included, each with a distribution map and colour illustration. The book is complemented by a regularly updated internet database providing free additional information. With its highly interdisciplinary approach, DAISIE and its Handbook will be the basis for future scientific investigations as well as management and control of alien invasive species in Europe.

In releasing the text of this volume, originally set aside as a collec tion for possible posthumous publication, during my lifetime, I am acting in a sense as my own executor: I want to save my heirs and literary executors the decision whether these pieces should be print ed or reprinted in the present context, a decision which I wanted to postpone to the last possible moment. As to the reasons why I changed my mind I can refer to the Introduction. Here I merely want to make some acknowledgments, first to the copyright holders for the reprinted pieces and then to some personal friends who had an important influence on the premature birth of this brainchild. The copyright holders to whom I am indebted for·the permis sion to reprint here, in the original or in slightly amended form, the articles listed are, with their names in alphabetical order: Ablex Publishing Company: 'Putting Ourselves into the Place of Others' Atherton Press: 'Equality in Existentialism' and 'Human Dignity: A Challenge to Contemporary Philosophy' Friends Journal: 'Is There a Human Right to One's Native Soil?' Gordon Breach: 'Human Dignity: A Challenge to Contemporary Philosophy?' Humanities Press: 'Ethics for Fellows in the Fate of Existence' Journal of the History of Ideas: 'Accident of Birth: A Non-utili tarian Motif in Mill's Philosophy' Philosophical Review: 'A Defense of Human Equality' Review of Existential Psychology and Psychiatry: 'On the I-am me Experience in Childhood and Adolescence' The Monist: 'A Phenomenological Approach to the Ego'

Land Ecology written by Isaak Samuel Zonneveld and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995 with Business & Economics categories.

In this book Zonneveld notes what he heard himself telling his students during the last quarter of a century, and what he, his collaborators and students learned working together in the field on all continents and in all climates, from the marshes to the mountains, from the Arctic to the tropics, from the deserts to the rain forests, in empty areas and overcrowded ones. Zonneveld emphasizes an approach embracing the horizontal pattern as well as the systemic character of the land, from the limited site up to the scale of "Gaia". The binding element is the application of management and conservation of land as a "home range"; thus, land evaluation methodology and large area survey techniques based on sound landscape ecological principles, especially applicable in developing countries, are well represented in this book.

Making Transformative Geographies written by Benedikt Schmid and has been published by transcript Verlag this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-06-30 with Social Science categories.

In the light of social and environmental unsustainability and injustice, the continuing attachment to the idea that a growth-based economy is reconcilable with human prosperity and ecological limits seems increasingly implausible. Tracing and dissecting the complexities of social change, »Making Transformative Geographies« speaks about the development of visions, alternatives, and strategies for a radical transformation beyond accumulation and growth. Covering an empirical sample of 24 eco-social organizations, projects, and groupings in the city of Stuttgart (Germany), the book drills down into the social, spatial, and strategic dimensions of transformation. It advances a conceptually and empirically grounded assessment of the possibilities and limitations of community activism and civic engagement for shifting transformative geographies towards a degrowth trajectory.

'...this is an excellent report and will make a major contribution to the debate (on adjustment issues). It will be of the same importance as the earlier ILO contribution, in a different context, of the employment missions some 15-20 years ago, in Kenya and Zambia.' Hans Singer, Emeritus Professor, Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex 'Arguments in this volume often figured in important UN conferences on problems of structural adjustment in Africa. They will continue to define the parameters of the debate on the African crisis for a long time to come.' A.Adedeji, African Centre for Development and Strategic Studies, Nigeria 'This book makes an important contribution to our understanding of the economies of Africa and calls into question much of the received wisdom on the nature and causes of the economic crisis in sub-Saharan Africa. In consequence, it forces serious academics and policy makers to re-examine orthodox policy prescriptions and their distributional impact. The book provides refreshingly original insights and careful examination of available data. The policy implications of the work are vitally important for the people of Africa.' J.Loxley, Professor and Head, Department of Economics, University of Manitoba 'This is an iconoclastic book, most welcome as it brings out fresh evidence and new facts about the urbanization of policy and informalization of the urban economy in Africa. It is an important contribution to the debate on the direction of adjustment, reform and development policies in Africa, which would certainly be read with great eagerness'. S.Rasheed, Director, Public Administration, Human Resources and Social Development Division, UNECA, Addis Ababa 'Africa Misunderstood is an important book because it refutes a substantial body of incorrect, out of date and/or wrongly generalised conventional (un)wisdom. Exploration of changes over time, of the rise of urban absolute poverty, of the diversity and complexity of sSA economies and of how weak generalisations assumed in much programme design work are (both empirically and logically) occupy the main portion of this volume and constitute its major strength. Given its relatively accessible structure and style, it is to be hoped policy makers and advisers will read it as well as academic researchers, university faculty and their students.' R.H.Green, Professor, Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex In the past (and sometimes even now) African economies were depicted as suffering from 'urban bias', which strangled the agricultural sector and caused eventually the 'African Crisis'. Based on ten detailed case studies this book questions that stereotype and shows the dramatic turnaround in the relative position of farmers and wage earners in the recent past. The implications for standard adjustment programmes and urban survival strategies are discussed.
