Jews and Germans is the only book in English to delve fully into the history and challenges of the German-Jewish relationship, from before the Holocaust to the present day. The Weimar Republic era—the fifteen years between Germany’s defeat in World War I (1918) and Hitler’s accession (1933)—has been characterized as a time of unparalleled German-Jewish concord and collaboration. Even though Jews constituted less than 1 percent of the German population, they occupied a significant place in German literature, music, theater, journalism, science, and many other fields. Was that German-Jewish relationship truly reciprocal? How has it evolved since the Holocaust, and what can it become? Beginning with the German Jews’ struggle for emancipation, Guenter Lewy describes Jewish life during the heyday of the Weimar Republic, particularly the Jewish writers, left-wing intellectuals, combat veterans, and adult and youth organizations. With this history as a backdrop he examines the deeply disparate responses among Jews when the Nazis assumed power. Lewy then elucidates Jewish life in postwar West Germany; in East Germany, where Jewish communists searched for a second German-Jewish symbiosis based on Marxist principles; and finally in the united Germany—illuminating the complexities of fraught relationships over time.

Deplores the historiographic neglect of the calamitous fate of German Jewry during the war period. Part of the reason is perhaps that for Germans, including German historians, it was too disturbing to consider the murder of their own neighbors, whereas Israeli historians are oriented toward studying Eastern European Jewry. German Jews made up only about 2% of all European Jews, but the process of their annihilation was in many ways distinctive and requires a historiography of its own. Yet in the context of the general history of the Holocaust or of the Jews in Germany, the topic is usually considered briefly, if at all. More is to be found in accounts of specific aspects (e.g. economic or cultural), in survivors' memoirs, and in local studies; but a comprehensive monograph is lacking. also argues that the association of Nazism solely with Auschwitz deprives us of lessons on racism and antisemitism that can be learned from its earlier stages.

This volume examines selected works of German literature from Gustav Freytag to Joseph Goebbels in relation to ethical, socio-economic, and political texts from the economic «take off» period in the middle of the nineteenth century up to the rise of National Socialism and investigates two aspects of anti-Semitic anti-capitalistic representations contained therein. First it traces how the Jews gained the dubious distinction of being the inventors, even embodiment, of capitalism and elaborates on negative traits assigned to both of them. Second it examines how representations of specifically Jewish capitalists were instrumentalized both to discredit laissez faire and simultaneously to assist in the definition of a specifically «German» socio-economic ethos.

Das Werk zeigt die Kontexte und die politischen und gesellschaftlichen Dynamiken, die zu diesem beispiellosen Massenverbrechen führten. Die Edition umfasst 16 Bände mit ca. 5.500 zeitgenössischen, wissenschaftlich kommentierten Zeugnissen der Verfolgten, der Täter und nicht unmittelbar Beteiligter. Für die Bearbeitung der Bände konnten 26 Expertinnen und Experten gewonnen werden. Die Dokumente wurden aus 21 Sprachen ins Deutsche übersetzt. Jedem Band ist eine ausführliche Einleitung vorangestellt, mit mehreren Registern und einem Sachindex können die Dokumente erschlossen werden. Die Bände sind ein vielfältig nutzbares Hilfsmittel sowohl für die Forschung als auch für die historische Bildungsarbeit. Die Edition wurde von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft gefördert und vom Institut für Zeitgeschichte München-Berlin, der Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg und dem Bundesarchiv herausgegeben.
