The present volume contains the lectures and papers given at the 1994 international conference on hermeneutics in Halle (Germany). The conference aimed at a state of the art in the light of recent developments in science and humanities. The place in which the conference was held is renowned for its centuries-old tradition in hermeneutics and among the lectures there are indeed some devoted to this history. For the most part, however, the papers concentrate on present-day problems in fields as different as comparative literature, religious studies, bible exegesis, esthetics, social sciences, intercultural dialogue. The theme of the conference, "strangeness and familiarity", reflects the tension in which any interpretation process is situated and that any theory of interpretation has to account for. The contributions to the volume are in German and French.

With a Foreword by Lars Vinx, this book is the first complete English translation of the Italian jurist, Emilio Betti’s classic work Die Hermeneutik als allgemeine Methodik der Geisteswissenschaften, originally published in 1962. Betti’s hermeneutical theory is presented here as a ‘general methodology of the sciences of the spirit’, such as to allow the achievement of objectivity, however relative it might be. Its central focus is the tension between an object, to be considered in its autonomy, and the subjectivity of the interpreter, who can understand the object only by means of his or her own categories, historical-cultural conditions, and interests. Set against the work of Bultmann and Gadamer, Betti is concerned to limit the arbitrariness of subjectivity without diminishing the place of interpretation. Detailing the principles that govern, and therefore, guide any interpretation, Betti traces how interpretation in art and in literature, as well as in the fields of science, jurisprudence, sociology, and economy, can be said to be objective, albeit only ever in a relative sense. This summa of Betti’s key contribution to hermeneutic theory will be of interest across a range of disciplines, including legal and literary theory, philosophy, as well as the history and sociology of law.

Sie ist Philosophie, das heisst, sie ist eine Reflexion, und zwar uber das, was menschliche Lebensgestaltung zu sein hat. Im selben Sinne ist die philosophische Hermeneutik nicht selbst die Kunst des Verstehens, sondern die Theorie derselben. Aber die eine wie die andere Form von Bewusstmachung steigt aus der Praxis auf und bleibt ohne sie ein blosser Leerlauf. Das ist der besondere Sinn von Wissen und Wissenschaft, den es von der Problematik der Hermeneutik aus neu zu legitimieren galt. Das war das Ziel, dem ich auch nach Vollendung von 'Wahrheit und Methode' meine Arbeit gewidmet habe

The aim of this volume is to assess Friedrich Schleiermacher’s contribution to the theory of translation two centuries after his address “On the Different Methods of Translating” at the Academy of Sciences in Berlin, and to explore its potential for generating future innovative work. For the first time this classic text forms the object of a focused, interdisciplinary approach. Scholars of philosophy and translation, working in English, French and German, provide a close reading of Schleiermacher’s lecture and combine their efforts in order to highlight the fundamental role translation plays in his hermeneutic thinking and the importance of hermeneutics for his theorisation of translation, within the historical and literary context of Romanticism. The various contributions revisit key concepts in Schleiermacher’s thought, in particular the famous metaphor of movement; examine the relation between his theoretical writings and his practice as translator of Plato, unearthing some of their philosophical and linguistic implications; discuss Schleiermacher’s reception in Germany and abroad; and assess the relevance of his ideas in the beginning of the 21st century as well as their potential to inspire further research in translation and interpreting.

Hermeneutik gilt heutzutage meistens als Bestandteil der Philosophie. Das ist aber eine verkürzte Sicht ihrer Gegenwart und erst recht ihrer Geschichte. Daneben hatten aber vier andere Wissenschaften eigene Auslegungstheorien und Methodenlehren entwickelt. Diese fünf Entwicklungspfade des gesamten Feldes werden hier zum ersten Mal von den Anfängen bis zur Gegenwart im Überblick dargestellt.
