Schelling a donné entre 1802 et 1805, à Iéna puis à Wurzbourg, ses conférences sur la philosophie de l'Art qui sont le fleuron de la philosophie de l'Identité. Transgressant le subjectivisme du Système de l'idéalisme transcendantal, il prétend concilier les deux tendances philosophiques de l'Hen kai Pan issues de Spinoza - pour qui l'Un est le Tout, et de Leibnitz - pour qui c'est le Tout qui est Un. Il veut ainsi allier l'intuition intellectuelle au symbolisme, à la diversité de l'univers. La solution est dans l'Idée - qui unit l'infini au fini, elle est dans le double mouvement qui rythme l'univers : ésemplasie de l'infini dans le fini, restauration du fini dans l'infini. L'Art, comme la Nature, est source de révélation divine. La mythologie, le monde des dieux en est la matière privilégiée. L'irruption de l'élément mystique et irrationnel, lié au christianisme et à la notion de chute qui lui est inhérent, énonce ou manifeste la scission interne d'un univers qui semblait harmonieux. Par rapport à la Mythologie ultérieure, la chute est seulement postposée à l'ancienne mythologie. Les Mystères grecs ne sont pas encore interprétés comme le portique d'une Révélation dont le courant mystique est le cœur-même. Ils s'inscrivent dans une perspective historico-culturelle, non dans ce qui deviendra le " procès théogonique " de la conscience. Schelling, bien que tout acquis à la positivité de la religion révélée, n'a pas franchi le pas qui le reconduira à la finitude réelle, à la valorisation du monde créé et de l'Incarnation. Ce sont ces éléments généraux de tension, mais surtout le sens aigu de l'auteur pour les analogies, et l'emprise de l'intuition animatrice dans la partie spéciale, qui donnent à la philosophie de l'Art son allure à la fois grandiose et inachevée, présageant la mutation spectaculaire de la philosophie schellingienne à venir. Patrick Geddes, scienziato, attivista e filosofo nato in Scozia e vissuto al passaggio tra ‘800 e ‘900, ha fatto di quella formazione una ricerca costante e feconda, fino a definire una disciplina che architetti, urbanisti e ambientalisti tuttora studiano: Civics, la scienza da applicare alla trasformazione dell’ambiente abitato, fondata sull’azione dei suoi cittadini.
