The most comprehensive English-language collection of work ever by "the greatest poet of the twentieth century--in any language" (Gabriel Garcia Marquez) "In his work a continent awakens to consciousness." So wrote the Swedish Academy in awarding the Nobel Prize to Pablo Neruda, the author of more than thirty-five books of poetry and one of Latin America's most revered writers, lionized during his lifetime as "the people's poet." This selection of Neruda's poetry, the most comprehensive single volume available in English, presents nearly six hundred poems, scores of them in new and sometimes multiple translations, and many accompanied by the Spanish original. In his introduction, Ilan Stavans situates Neruda in his native milieu as well as in a contemporary English-language one, and a group of new translations by leading poets testifies to Neruda's enduring, vibrant legacy among English-speaking writers and readers today.

Learning from children about citizenship status and how it shapes their schooling There is a persistent assumption in the field of education that children are largely unaware of their immigration status and its implications. In Knowing Silence, Ariana Mangual Figueroa challenges this “myth of ignorance.” By listening carefully to both the speech and significant silences of six Latina students from mixed-immigration-status families, from elementary school into middle school and beyond, she reveals the complex ways young people understand and negotiate immigration status and its impact on their lives. Providing these children with iPod Touches to record their own conversations, Mangual Figueroa observes when and how they choose to talk about citizenship at home, at school, and in public spaces. Analyzing family conversations about school forms, in-class writing assignments, encounters with the police, and applications for college, she demonstrates that children grapple with the realities of citizenship from an early age. Educators who underestimate children’s knowledge, Mangual Figueroa shows, can marginalize or misunderstand these students and their families. Combining significant empirical findings with reflections on the ethical questions surrounding research and responsibility, Mangual Figueroa models new ways scholars might collaborate with educators, children, and families. With rigorous and innovative ethnographic methodologies, Knowing Silence makes audible the experiences of immigrant-origin students in their own terms, ultimately offering teachers and researchers a crucial framework for understanding citizenship in the contemporary classroom.

After a drunk driver leaves her with an impaired memory and a consuming anger, scientist Kate Solterra retreats to the Virginia mountains to reconstruct her life. Anticipating a peaceful place to recover, she doesn’t expect to find a group of Quakers involved in offering a safe haven to refugees fleeing the Salvadoran Civil War. Kate feels a strong connection to the refugees because, like her, they must reinvent their lives. When Kate’s involvement with the Quaker Meeting and the refugees leads to her becoming a target of those objecting to the Quakers’ plans, she makes a radical decision. Although Kate believes in science, not faith, she begins making a truce with her limitations and realizes that she indeed can create a different kind of life for herself—and to her surprise, God may be speaking to her out of those deep silences in the Meetinghouse, after all. In the Light of Silence is a story about marshaling courage to respond to fear, maintaining faith in the midst of doubt, and experiencing the redemptive power of forgiveness.

"Although we've gotten used to second-generation actors equaling or surpassing the accomplishments of their parents, the same hasn't happened with second-generation novelists. Nonetheless there are a few, and added to their small number ought to be Kaylie Jones."—New York Times Merryn Huntley is rudely awakened to the many bad decisions she has made in her life when she is told by two Dallas police officers that her wealthy husband Beau has been killed in a car accident, along with a local waitress. Merryn's first instinct is to flee in order to protect her nine-year-old daughter, and the only place that feels safe enough is her mother's beautiful, isolated home in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Merryn's mother, the redoubtable Bibi, always said to her as a child, "When you tell a lie, make sure you keep it as close to the truth as possible, because it will be easier to remember." Ironically, from the moment Merryn arrives, she is forced into twisting the truth—about how much she knew of her husband and his shady business affairs; about her own secret lovers; and most importantly, that she is beginning to doubt the one person who has always been the greatest influence in her life: her mother. The situation worsens when two FBI agents show up and begin to ask Merryn questions about her husband's business, which only intensifies her need to continue lying. While Merryn's perfect life begins to crumble around her, she must decide whether or not she can face the most painful reality of all—that she has been lying to herself her entire life. Kaylie Jones has published six books, the most recent a memoir, Lies My Mother Never Told Me. Her novel A Soldier's Daughter Never Cries was adapted as a Merchant Ivory film in 1998.
