Étant interdisciplinaire, l’EE a des programmes spécifiques ; ses buts et ses contenus sont décrits, aux différents niveaux, de même que le matériel et les moyens éducatifs, les activités extrascolaires et les campagnes d’information du public. La formation et les qualités des formateurs comme celles du personnel enseignant en EE et les problèmes posés par le recyclage de ce personnel sont autant de points traités dans cet ouvrage.

Ce travail s'inscrit dans l'approche Sciences-Technologies-Société et dans le cadre de l'éducation au développement durable. Elle contribue à l'étude d'une question scientifique socialement vive: l'interaction biodiversité-plantes génétiquement modifiées (PGM). Le terrain d'analyse est une expérimentation multi-épisodique auprès d'étudiants en master Sciences de la Vie en options écologie et biotechnologie de la Faculté des Sciences de Tunis. La problématique part du constat que cette question environnementale est mal-structurée, incertaine et a des implications dans divers domaines. Toutefois, cette question est appréhendée en master de manière non problématisée et sans que soient pris en compte les multiples enjeux qu'elle cristallise. Les analyses montrent une appropriation de connaissances interdisciplinaires et un changement d'opinions vis-à-vis de la controverse socio-scientifique abordée. Trois effets se combinent sur les raisonnements, l'appropriation des connaissances et l'évolution des opinions: l'effet de la contextualisation, l'effet de l'expérimentation et l'effet de la formation suivie.
