Through the lens of expressive culture, Performing Folklore tracks Portugal's transition from fascism to democracy, and from imperial metropole to EEC member state. Kimberly DaCosta Holton examines the evolution and significance of ranchos folclóricos, groups of amateur musicians and dancers who perform turn-of-the-century popular tradition and have acted as cultural barometers of change throughout 20th-century Portugal. She investigates the role that these folklore groups played in the mid-twentieth-century dictatorship, how they fell out of official favor with the advent of democracy, and why they remain so popular in Portugal's post-authoritarian state, especially in emigrant and diasporic communities. Holton looks at music, dance, costume, repertoire, venue, and social interplay in both local and global contexts. She considers the importance of revivalist folklore in the construction and preservation of national identity in the face of globalization. This book embraces "invented tradition" as process rather than event, presenting an ethnography not only of folkloric revivalism but also of sweeping cultural transformation, promoted alternately by authoritarianism, democracy, emigration, and European unification.

Esta é a 2ª edição revista e ampliada do bem-sucedido Dicionário de Onomatopeias e Vocábulos Expressivos, resultado de uma pesquisa prazerosa nas letras da MPB, nas literaturas, poemas e nas histórias em quadrinhos. Esta obra está dividida em três partes: Primeira Parte, Segunda Parte e Adendo. A Primeira Parte reúne os vocábulos gerais que estão registrados nos dicionários convencionais como onomatopeia ou vocábulo expressivo, inclusive os que estão registrados como “prov.” (provavelmente) e “talvez” pelos autores e ainda os vocábulos onomatopaicos registrados como tal por autores de literaturas, livros diversos e letras da MPB. A Segunda Parte reúne os vocábulos que são muito parecidos com a onomatopeia ou com o vocábulo expressivo, mas não estão assinalados como tal nos dicionários convencionais, ou porque são de origem desconhecida ou porque são de origem estrangeira (no caso da onomatopeia, pois o vocábulo expressivo é somente da Língua Portuguesa). O Adendo apresenta vocábulos comuns que não são onomatopeias, entretanto, são usados como tal; e alguns caracteres usados especificamente nos gibis e histórias em quadrinhos.

In 1969, Dr. D.M. McArtor, Deputy Director of Technology for the US Dept. of Defense went before the Senate Committee for Approbations & requested $10 million to design a virus that is ''refractory to the immunological systems . In 1970, Dr. McArtor was granted the $10 million by the US Government to invent the AIDS virus. In 2000, feeling drawn to Brazil, the author arrived in the town of Iporanga, Sao Paulo where it is common knowledge among the residents that the US Army has been conducting some kind of secret experiments in a nearby cave hidden in the jungle in 1970. Impossible events occur on a regular basis, & previous to arriving in Iporanga he was shown through a series of coincidences that with the letter 'A' in front of his name, his surname is Apostlethwaite, or Apostobranco. On his second night, Kevin used a strange sentence for the first time & told a young doctor whose days are filled with AIDS victims; "I'm a white blood cell, I go where needed." In answer to her question regarding why he was there. Shortly after seeing a school music book full of Nazi mind control experiments with sound & melody, Apostobranco is shown a cave nearby called Caverna Laboratorio. The local residents were obviously victims of some kind of mind control. There are people in the valley that can't remember when their parents died, & another who can't remember that her husband died of AIDS. All of these things were more than enough to convince the author that he was no longer just a tourist but had assumed the role of a character in a legend. Iporanga! is an expose of numerous crimes against humanity. It's the true account of the discovery of the origin of AIDS & the bizarre series of events that surround it - an account of impossible coincidences & miracles, the misery of AIDS, & the terror of being chased by an army through the jungle in Brazil.
