Mike Southwell spent eight years writing his life story for his friends and family after he realised how much he had neglected to ask his own mum and dad about their lives. His book was to be his family's heritage but today we see that it is much more than that. It provides a social history, tales of crime and camaraderie, and advice on how to survive the worst and best moments in life. Mike started his working life as a hairdresser but, as a married man and father of two girls, he took the bold decision at the age of twenty-seven to join the Police Service. By the time he retired, he was a Chief Superintendent and had worked in CID and Special Branch. He now gives talks on his police exploits. Some of his tales are gruesome and others very funny but, like his book, always entertaining. Mike is a natural story teller with a style that is uncomplicated and open. His stories are well told, easy to read and like any good book, time passes quickly when absorbed in it. His alternating chapters between professional and personal life work well and the personal aspects of his life give a real insight into the man. His integrity, determination and sense of humour run through the book but more than that, he is not afraid to share his innermost feelings and emotions and this lifts the book to a higher level and reveals Mike's true humanity. AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER "Provocative and appealing . . . well worth your extremely limited time." —Barbara Spindel, The Wall Street Journal The average human lifespan is absurdly, insultingly brief. Assuming you live to be eighty, you have just over four thousand weeks. Nobody needs telling there isn’t enough time. We’re obsessed with our lengthening to-do lists, our overfilled inboxes, work-life balance, and the ceaseless battle against distraction; and we’re deluged with advice on becoming more productive and efficient, and “life hacks” to optimize our days. But such techniques often end up making things worse. The sense of anxious hurry grows more intense, and still the most meaningful parts of life seem to lie just beyond the horizon. Still, we rarely make the connection between our daily struggles with time and the ultimate time management problem: the challenge of how best to use our four thousand weeks. Drawing on the insights of both ancient and contemporary philosophers, psychologists, and spiritual teachers, Oliver Burkeman delivers an entertaining, humorous, practical, and ultimately profound guide to time and time management. Rejecting the futile modern fixation on “getting everything done,” Four Thousand Weeks introduces readers to tools for constructing a meaningful life by embracing finitude, showing how many of the unhelpful ways we’ve come to think about time aren’t inescapable, unchanging truths, but choices we’ve made as individuals and as a society—and that we could do things differently.

This PEN/Hemingway Award winner about coming of age in Los Angeles is a “little gem of a novel . . . a masterwork of Hollywood fiction” (Salon). He’s a child of 1940s Hollywood—specifically, Casa Fiesta, a ranch in the Malibu hills that he shares with his mother, a onetime Broadway headliner, and his father, a star of Westerns. But when his parents fall out of favor in Tinseltown, the narrator of this exquisitely crafted dark comedy loses his youthful idyll and accompanies his lovesick mother on a vodka-soaked international quest for romance and redemption. Meanwhile, his father lives in “diminished circumstances” in California, clinging to his silver-screen mementos, trusting that, someday soon, his ex-wife and his career will return. Tired of tending bar at his mother’s parties and listening to his father’s sad tales of former glory, the boy moves in with his best friend’s family in Beverly Hills. But nothing in La-La Land is quite what it seems, and when his new home turns out to be just as dysfunctional as the last, our teenage hero must somehow learn to accept his parents while finding the courage to break free and become his own man. This award-winning novel, “a kind of Catcher in the Rye for the Cheap Trick generation” (GQ), was cited by the Guardian as one of the “ten best neglected literary masterpieces.” Written by a New York Times–bestselling author who was a child of Hollywood movie stars himself, it has been praised for its “spectacularly deadpan humor” by the Atlantic Monthly and called “an insightful coming-of-age tale” by the Austin Chronicle.

The Great Spiritual Migration written by Brian D. McLaren and has been published by Hachette UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-10-20 with Religion categories.

Many people experience Christianity as a system of belief, focused on an exclusive Supreme Being who favours some and rejects others, and is defended by a set of change-averse, self-protecting institutions. In The Great Spiritual Migration, Brian McLaren proposes that this conventional understanding of Christianity is ripe for a conversion: from system of belief to way of life, from exclusive Supreme Being to the loving, healing, reconciling Spirit embodied in Jesus, and from an organised institutional religion that supports an unjust status quo to an organising movement-building religion that helps a better world be born. Drawing from his work as a pastor, speaker, ecumenical networker and activist, McLaren issues a call and offers a plan for radical change that can shift the direction of Christian faith to be more in sync with its founder, more life-giving for individual Christians and congregations - and more of a life-giving resource for the whole world.

A short and thoughtful introduction to traditional Chinese medicine that looks beyond the conventional boundaries of Western modernism and biomedical science Traditional Chinese medicine is often viewed as mystical or superstitious, with outcomes requiring naïve faith. Judith Farquhar, drawing on her hard-won knowledge of social, intellectual, and clinical worlds in today’s China, here offers a concise and nuanced treatment that addresses enduring and troublesome ontological, epistemological, and ethical questions. In this work, which is based on her 2017 Terry Lectures “Reality, Reason, and Action In and Beyond Chinese Medicine,” she considers how the modern, rationalized, and scientific field of traditional Chinese medicine constructs its very real objects (bodies, symptoms, drugs), how experts think through and sort out pathology and health (yinyang, right qi/wrong qi, stasis, flow), and how contemporary doctors act responsibly to “seek out the root” of bodily disorder. Through this refined investigation, East-West contrasts collapse, and systematic Chinese medicine, no longer a mystery or a pseudo-science, can become a philosophical ally and a rich resource for a more capacious science.

There is more to artefact analysis than the study of chronology and provenance. This is the theme of these essays which are based on discussions at the Theoretical Archaeology Group conferences at Durham and Bradford in 1993 and 1994. The authors are concerned that some of the theoretical and practical orientations of artefact analysis are restrictive and of questionable validity. Contents include: Individual and community choice in present-day pottery production and exchange in the Andes (Bill Sillar); The social context of eating and drinking in early Roman Britain (Karen I Meadows); Historical, geographical and anthropological imaginations: early ceramics in southern Italy (M Z Pluciennik); From ceramic finishes to modes of production: Iron Age finewares from central France (Kevin Andrews); Why do excavation reports have finds catalogues? (Penelope M Allison); Family, household and production: the potters of the Saintonge, France, 1500 to 1800 (Elizabeth Musgrave); The social significance of imported medieval pottery (Duncan H Brown); Habitus, social identity and Anglo-Saxon pottery (P W Blinkhorn); Towards a phenomenological approach to the study of medieval pottery (C G Cumberpatch); Size is important: Iron Age vessel capacities in central and southern England (Ann Woodward & Paul Blinkhorn).
