Como es sabido, los cuatro evangelios no son cuatro breves biografías de Jesús de Nazaret, ni sus autores pretendieron escribir cada cual su propia vida de Jesús. Lo que nos ofrecen no es una biografía, sino un mensaje religioso. En una biografía lo que interesa es su valor histórico. En un mensaje religioso lo que importa es su capacidad para producir convicciones que orienten nuestra forma de vivir de acuerdo con la religiosidad que allí se enseña. Si leemos los evangelios, lo que interesa no es saber si Lázaro estaba muerto y Jesús le devolvió la vida, sino enterarnos de lo que significa, para nuestra vida, la conducta de Jesús, que no pudo soportar la ausencia de Lázaro, y que causó que las autoridades del Sanedrín decidieran matarle. Así, en efecto, termina el capítulo del evangelio de Juan que relata el episodio de Lázaro. Resucitar a un difunto es un hecho portentoso. Hacer eso de forma que a uno le cueste la vida, es un hecho ejemplar. Este libro pretende hacernos pensar, no en la veracidad de la vida de Jesús, sino en su ejemplaridad. Lo que importa no es saber lo que hizo Jesús, sino vivir como vivió Jesús. De ahí que la pregunta decisiva que brota de la atenta meditación de estos comentarios a los evangelios no es: ¿En qué cree Vd?, sino más bien, ¿Cómo vive Vd?José María Castillo nació en Puebla de Don Fadrique (Granada), en 1929.
