Sarcophagi From The Jewish Catacombs Of Ancient Rome written by Adia Konikoff and has been published by Franz Steiner Verlag this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990 with Art categories.

This comprehensive inventory of all known sarcophagi from the Jewish catacombs of Rome, is the first specialized treatment of this subject in monograph form. It describes and analyses each sarcophagus and provides full reference material which it critically examines. This work thus fills a lacuna in the literature on this field, which has up to now been confined to the treatment of early Christian and pagan sarcophagi of the period. We have here a complete overview of the Jewish sarcophagi of ancient Rome, all of them illustrated by photographs and provided with extensive bibliographies. This work thus fills a lacuna in the literature on this field. Journal for the Study of Judaism Until this book, however, no one has attempted to assemble all of the Jewish sarcophagi separately in one place and to provide relevant information in the form of a well-ordered catalogue. For this reason, Konikoff's book provides a welcome resource for anyone interested in the material evidence of ancient Judaism and forms a good beginning for study of the sarcophagi, especially from a bibliographic point of view. Gnomon .

The Homeland actress’s “recollections of her unconventional youth in war-torn Beirut are heartbreaking yet humorous . . . in this unique” memoir (Publishers Weekly). Raised in 1970s Lebanon on Charles Baudelaire, A Clockwork Orange, and fine Bordeaux, Darina Al-Joundi was encouraged by her unconventional father to defy all taboos. She spent her adolescence defying death in Beirut nightclubs as bombs fell across the city. The more oppressive the country became, the more drugs and anonymous sex she had, fueling the resentment directed at her daily by the same men who would spend the night with her. As the war dies down, she begins to incur the consequences of her lifestyle. On his deathbed, her father’s last wish is for his favorite song, “Sinnerman” by Nina Simone, to be played at his funeral instead of the traditional suras of the Koran. When she does just that, the final act of defiance elicits a catastrophic response from her surviving family members. In this dramatic true story, Darina Al-Joundi is defiantly passionate about living her life as a liberated woman, even if it means leaving everyone and everything behind in this “beautifully taut and relentlessly unemotional” memoir (Kirkus).

“Poetically depicts a Bedouin boy’s extended coming of age and the uneasy navigation of his transition from provincial Syria to the West.” —Publishers Weekly Published to wide critical acclaim in France, Badawi is Mohed Altrad’s heartrending debut novel, inspired by the author’s own narrative arc from Bedouin orphan to engineer and finally billionaire businessman. In the Syrian desert, a young boy watches as his mother dies. She was a repudiated woman, abandoned by the boy’s powerful father, leaving Maïouf to his scornful grandmother. She wants Maïouf to carry on Bedouin tradition as a shepherd. But from the first time he sneaks off to the white-walled schoolhouse to watch the other children learn, Maïouf envisions a different future for himself. This is one extraordinary child’s story of fighting for an education—and a life—he was never supposed to have, from a tiny desert village to the city of Raqqa, from the university halls of Montpellier on to the oil fields of Abu Dhabi. With each step forward, Maïouf feels the love of his youth—a steadfast young Syrian woman named Fadia—and the shifting, haunted sands of his native village pulling him back toward the past he thought he had left behind. “In this tale of a boy caught between worlds, Altrad brings a sparse, lyrical quality to his prose that at times verges on the poetic.” —Los Angeles Review of Books

Councils In Action written by Audrey Richards and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1971-11-30 with Political Science categories.

A collection of seven papers by social anthropologists on the processes of decision-making in councils. Types of council described are one community-in-council, two arena councils, an elite council, two modern local government councils and a non-council, a temporary negotiating group which nevertheless displays certain features of the council proper. Most of the examples come from Africa (including Madagascar), but there is also an account of politics and decision-making in an English town council. The editors discuss the papers in a comparative framework, considering also other accounts of conciliar structure and decision-making. They review the ways in which decisions are reached and implemented in societies with very different structures and activities and discuss the impact of written records, colonial overrule and political independence. They attempt to outline some general principles of conciliar structure and process.

Dreams Of Empire written by André Vachon and has been published by Public Archives of Canada this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1982 with History categories.

Andre Vachon is clearly traditional in his choice of theme, selection of material, and the historical methods that he adopts. He expounds an older interpretation that accounted for the expansion of New France in terms of missionary zeal, the geographic imperative, economic necessity, and military security. Nothing is said that reflects the historical revisionism of the last two decades with its emphasis on self-interest and the personal pecuniary motive. The heroes are familiar: Cartier, Champlain, Talon, and Laval, but not Frontenac. The author raises no serious doubts about the desire on the part of these individuals for the expansion of New France, but he is forced to admit that by 1700 the colony had become too big and too fragile. Hardly a soul is criticized in the entire text. The general reader might be amused by knowing how cunning Amerindians duped Jacques Cartier or that Champlain never learned an Indian language and judged their conduct by the standards of French law rather than according to native customs he could never appreciate. ..."-- from review by T.A.
