Excerpt from 1926 Descriptive Catalog: Gladiolus Aristocrats I guarantee the prices in my list against drop. That is, if I lower any of my prices appreciably after you give your order I will give you enough extra to make up the difference. I have seen too many cases where people have bought bulbs at high prices in the Fall and then later could buy them from the same grower for 25 to 100% less. I know from actual experience that this leaves a bad feeling, a feeling that I don't want my customers to have. This applies more to new and high priced bulbs. Formerly you had to buy new varieties in the Fall and run the risk of a drop in price later or wait till Spring and run the chance of their being sold out. If you want to buy good new varieties, I should advise you not to wait too long as there is a big demand for the good ones. Now you can order early and feel confident that you are going to get your money's worth. If prices should go up as they some times do I will fill the orders I have on hand at the original prices. This journal records the Civil War experiences of a sensitive, well-educated, young southern woman. Kate Stone was twenty when the war began, living with her widowed mother, five brothers, and younger sister at Brokenburn, their plantation home in northeastern Louisiana. When Grant moved against Vicksburg, the family fled before the invading armies, eventually found refuge in Texas, and finally returned to a devastated home. Kate began her journal in May, 1861, and made regular entries up to November, 1865. She included briefer sketches in 1867 and 1868. In chronicling her everyday activities, Kate reveals much about a way of life that is no more: books read, plantation management and crops, maintaining slaves in the antebellum period, the attitude and conduct of slaves during the war, the fate of refugees, and civilian morale. Without pretense and with almost photographic clarity, she portrays the South during its darkest hours.

This volume of studies seeks an anthropological view of medicine and the healing arts as they were situated within the lives of medieval people. Miracle cures and charms as well as drugs and surgery fall within the scope of the authors represented here, as does advice about diet and regimen. As well, the volume looks at wellness and illness in broad contexts, avoiding the tendency of modern medicine to focus on the isolation and definition of pathological states.

We all want to understand the world around us, and the ancient Greeks were the first to try and do so in a way we can properly call scientific. Their thought and writings laid the essential foundations for the revivals of science in medieval Baghdad and renaissance Europe. Now their work is accessible to all, with this invaluable introduction to c.100 scientific authors active from 320 BCE to 230 CE. The book begins with an outline of a new socio-political model for the development and decline of Greek science, followed by eleven chapters that cover the main disciplines: * the science which the Greeks saw as fundamental - mathematics * astronomy * astrology and geography * mechanics * optics and pneumatics * the non-mathematical sciences of alchemy, biology, medicine and 'psychology'. Each chapter contains an accessible introduction on the origins and development of the topic in question, and all the authors are set in context with brief biographies.
