Excerpt from The Revised Price Indexes: The 1950 Revision of the Bae Indexes of Prices Received by Farmers, and of Prices Paid by Farmers, Including Interest, Taxes, and Farm Wage Rates Commodities purchased. 24 pp. Washington, D. C. 1928. [processed]value of farm products has not been entirely satisfactory because farmers do not buy at whole sale, nor are index numbers of nonagricultural wholesale prices weighted according to the amount of farmers' purchases. The foreword explained that this index number of prices paid by farmers had been constructed to meet the need of a better measure of price changes in commodities bought by farmers for use in the family living and for production. The weights used for the index number had been determined largely from data collected by the Department of Agriculture and from Census reports. The prices paid by farmers had been collected by Crop Estimates. It stated that C. F. Sarle and mem bers of the Divisions of Farm Management and Costs, and Farm Population and Rural Life had contributed toward the development of this index number of prices paid by farmers. Excerpt from Index of Generic Names of Fossil Plants, 1820-1950 This work comprises an index of generic names of fossil plants, exclusive of the diatoms, that have been published from 1820 through 1950. It is based on the U. S. Geological Survey's working Compendium Index of Paleobotany and its ac companying bibliography. Although several hundred genera have been added by the author, it is realized that the list' is not complete, particularly for the past two decades. An attempt has been made to cite for each genus a type species, or one that is representative. In addition a brief notation is given concerning the age, geo graphic origin, and taxonomic status of most of the fossils. For some plants this information is further supplemented with such notations as seemed desirable to aid most effectively those persons who may have occasion to seek the type of in formation that is presented. It may be emphasized that this is not a critical study but is intended rather as an informational source concerning the origin of the respective generic concepts. The introduction includes a sketch of the historical origin of the Compendium and states in some detail the types of problems encountered in presenting the work in this form. Excerpt from The Tobacco Situation, Vol. 53: August 1950 The 1950 crop of tobacco of about million pounds is slightly smaller than last year's but is one-third larger than the prewar average. Acreage allotments for some types were set lower than last year because of large supplies. Marketing of the 1950 cr0p of tobacco began in late July when auctions Opened for flue-cured, the largest single class of tobaccoo Demand has been very strong and'is expected to continue so. Flue - cured prices for the season through mid - August averaged 51 cents per pound percent higher than in the comparable period of the 19119 season. The 1950 support level for flue-cured computed at 90 percent of the June parity is 115 cents per pound compared with H2 cents last year. Market prices for most grades have usually been well above the support level and growers have been placing a smaller proportion under Government loan than last season. Marketings of Burley, fire - cured, dark air-.cured, and cigar tobacco begin in the late fall. The support levels for all these types will be higher than in the 19149 season. Tobacco parities. As now calculated under the new parity formula pre scribed by the Agricultural Acts of 191m and 19119. Are higher than under the old. Formula. Support levels for tobacco types other than flue-cured are determined by the position of the parity index as of September 15. This index in July 1950.
