Se bem que não seja a imagem que emerge da comunicação social, a área científica mais forte no nosso país é a Química — a ciência da vida real, que também é uma «ciência verde», intimamente ligada à transformação radical do estilo de vida que levou a um considerável aumento de esperança de vida da humanidade. A Química não só é o domínio com maior produtividade e maior impacto científico de Portugal, como nele dispomos de seis universidades no top 1% mundial em citações científicas. Independentemente do mérito pessoal de Sebastião Formosinho e seus colaboradores, não admira que seja neste mesmo domínio que estes cientistas, ao terem desenvolvido contra o consenso científico vigente um novo modelo teórico (ISM) para estimar a velocidade das transformações moleculares, possam ter sobrevivido por vinte anos ao confronto científico com um dos paradigmas vigentes que mereceu o Prémio Nobel da Química em 1992, na pessoa do Prof. Rudolph Marcus. E conseguiram “vencer” a Natureza ao verem uma das suas mais arrojadas previsões, feita em 1991, ter sido confirmada e publicada em 2006. Encerraram neste ponto um ciclo no combate científico que travam, apesar de ainda não terem convencido amplamente a comunidade da validade e eficácia das suas ideias. Já surgem, porém, sinais de viragem em algumas “autoridades científicas” da comunidade dos químicos. A razão tem a sua força, mas não basta! Mediante um percurso de facetas autobiográficas, de análise epistemológica e sociológica, de controvérsias científicas de bastidores, do bosquejo das dificuldades de produzir ciência e fazê-la valer nos custos-de-contexto português, o leitor irá percorrer uma história de fortes contrastes e de perspetivas surpreendentes, imprescindível para quem quiser penetrar em «o que é isto de ser um cientista?». No último capítulo o autor presenteia-nos com o seu modo de “ver”, com algum auto-distanciamento, mas com grande humanização, um internamento hospitalar, porque a longevidade vem à mente quando se pensa em qualquer caminho de ribalta. Though we might not think so from the media, the strongest area of science in Portugal is actually chemistry — the science of real life, which is also a “green science”, closely connected to the radical transformation of life style that has considerably increased the life expectancy of mankind. Chemistry is not only the domain with the greatest productivity and scientific impact in Portugal, it is also the subject in which we have six universities in the top 1% in the world as regards scientific citations. Irrespective of the personal merit of Sebastião Formosinho and his team, it is not surprising that these scientists, by developing a new theoretical model (ISM) to estimate the velocity of molecular transformations – a model which went against the established knowledge on the subject – have for twenty years been offering a serious challenge to one of the paradigms that won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1992 in the person of Prof. Rudolph Marcus. They also managed to “overcome” Nature when one of their boldest predictions, made in 1991, was confirmed and published in 2006. This effectively ended one round of this scientific battle, although the scientific community was not yet convinced of the validity of these ideas. Recently, however, there have been signs of change as some authorities in the chemistry world were gradually won round. This work offers a glimpse behind the scenes at knowledge in the making, a journey that involves autobiographical details, epistemological and sociological analysis, and scientific controversies, and which outlines the difficulties of producing science and making it past the Portuguese red tape. This is a story of strong contrasts and surprising perspectives, essential for anyone that wishes to understand what it means to be a scientist. The last chapter describes a hospitalization, told from the author’s unique perspective, but with a certain amount of distance and with great humanization – for after all longevity is what comes to mind when we think of any route through the limelight.

Sustainable development is often thought of as a product that can be obtained by following a prescribed course of interventions. Rather than conceptualizing it as a sweet spot of economic, ecological, and social balance, sustainable development is an ongoing process of embroilments requiring constant negotiation of often-competing aims. Sustainable development politics yield highly uneven results among different members of society and different geographic areas. As this book argues, such imbalances mean that sustainable development processes often prioritize economic over environmental goals, perpetuating and reinforcing economic and political inequalities. Governing the Rainforest looks at development and conservation efforts in the Brazilian Amazon, where the government and corporate interests bump up against those of environmentalists and local populations. This book asks why sustainable development continues to be such a powerful and influential idea in the region, and what impact it has had on various political and economic interests and geographic areas. In other words, as Eve Z. Bratman argues, sustainable development is a political practice in itself. This book offers detailed case study analysis, including of the creation of vast conservation corridors, the construction of one of the largest hydroelectric plants in the world, and new forms of land settlement projects.
