Excerpt from Fifty Years in the Royal Navy How far these pages may prove of general interest I cannot tell, but they will at least show how opposed the Navy can be to necessary re forms, involving radical departures from traditional routine; the extent to which national interests may be injured owing to conservative forces within, and without, the public services; and what injury the country may suffer from politicians interfering in technical matters, which they necessarily do not understand. It is my hope that ultimate benefit may result from an honest attempt to shed light upon matters of Vital concern to the nation by means of my personal record. In that belief, these reminiscences have been published, and I would only wish to add that nothing has been set down in malice. My intention has been not to attack persons, but to expose rather the weaknesses and defects of our administrative machinery, in so far as I had experience of it. This new history of the Royal Navy, published to coincide with the Golden Jubilee of the White Ensign Association, is a full and exciting account of all the many campaigns, operations and deployments conducted around the world from the Cold War and the Cod Wars to the Falklands War and the Gulf Wars. It has been written and compiled from privileged access to secret and confidential Admiralty Plans and Commanding Officers' reports and contains a wealth of previously unpublished material. The story of how the Royal Navy has adapted to meet the many new challenges of the modern world and how it has carried out its vital roles from manning the nation's strategic nuclear deterrent to guarding the vital offshore oil and gas facilities as well as protecting Britain's worldwide interests is a truly fascinating one, while the development of ships, submarines, aircraft, weapons, tactics and strategies as well as the changes in personnel and life at sea are brought to life by contributions from people who served over the period. Profusely illustrated throughout with many previously unpublished photographs and paintings, this beautifully-produced volume is a magnificent golden jubilee tribute to the Royal Navy.

With family association with the service going back four generations, Percy Scott entered the Royal Navy as a cadet in 1866, aged just thirteen. Twelve years later, as a young Lieutenant with a growing interest in gunnery, Scott attended a course at H.M.S. Excellent to qualify as a Gunnery Lieutenant. This would mark the beginning of his quest to improve gunnery, and his criticism of the apparatus behind the Navy, at a time when there was stiff opposition towards any form of naval reform. Scott's tenacity did not endear himself to the Admiralty, but times - like attitudes - would change only with a frustrating slowness. Before his final retirement he would see ships evolve from wind propulsion, as steam was still an auxiliary, and fitted with gun carriages reminiscent of centuries gone by, to something more familiar to us today. In Fifty Years in the Royal Navy Scott presents his efforts - and those of his brother officers - to improve the shooting of the British Fleet alongside his account of a lifetime's service, incorporating five wars. Adm. Sir Percy Scott, BT., K.C.B., K.C.V.O., LL.D. (1853-1924) was a Royal Navy officer and pioneer of naval gunnery. Over the course of his career he demonstrated considerable foresight and ingenuity, and remained unyielding in his drive for improvement. Retired in 1913, with the outbreak of WWI he found himself returned to duty, advising the Admiralty on matters of gunnery; ultimately, his vision had proven true. In the early part of the year 1914, having nothing' to do, and as Ireland was arming for a civil war, I thought I would join the Ulster Field Force, but they had so many military officers ready to serve with them that I was not wanted. I was disgusted to find that there was a secret plot by which the Navy was to take part in the attack on Ulster. It was terrible to realise that the Royal Navy was to be employed against a section of Irishmen who were loyal to our King and the country, and that the civil war was to take place simply because a certain number of men wanted to remain in Parliament. The situation was unique. The political party in office had two courses open to them: one to go out of office and have no civil war; the other to remain in office and have a civil war. It seems incredible that two hundred and...
