Excerpt from Report on the Teaching of Mathematics in Japan, 1912 Thematics IN japan prepared by myself and published conjointly with this book, will account for very many shortcomings both in form and content to be found in these Divisional Reports now bound in one volume. It is much to be regretted that our best intentions were forbidden the support of our best energies. Moreover, in the work of translating the Japanese original into English, far greater difficulties were experienced than were anticipated, and indeed to such a degree as would be almost incredible to those who had no hand in it. Excerpt from Japan and the United States 1853-1921 For the past fifteen years my university duties have been solely concerned with the investigation and teach ing of the modern history of the Far East. In that time I have made two visits to Eastern Asia, to check up my studies by observation. These historical investigations should have helped me to understand the causes of many of the present conditions in the Far East, and to avoid some of the errors into which one may fall who confines his studies to a single country without considering con temporary movements in other lands. If these pages help, in any degree, the readers on both sides of the Pacific to understand better the point of View of their neighbors, I shall feel richly repaid. Excerpt from The Development of Philosophy in Japan: A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of Princeton University, in Candidacy for the Degree, of Doctor of Philosophy It is helpful, nay, even necessary for our present task to have a general knowledge of the mental characteristics of the Japanese. The mental play in the theatre of a nation can be fully understood only in and through our thorough familiarity with some main and significant traits of its actors. If we neglect this preliminary study we can hardly penetrate into the real nature of what has been happening. Excerpt from Japan, Vol. 8: Described and Illustrated by the Japanese It is probable that very few foreigners ever learn to appreciate Japanese dancing. One reason for their want of sympathy is that they approach the study with prejudiced minds. Their conception of dancing is that it must be either musical gymnastics deriving their charm from harmony of sound and motion, and pleasurable chiefly to the performer, or a spectacular display, like the Occidental bal/ct, representing large combinations of graceful movements, enhanced by splendid scenery and accessories of painting and sculpture. But in Japan dancing has primarily a mimetic purpose. With rare exceptions, the dance represents some historical incident, some mythical legend, some scene from the realm of folk-lore or superstition. The technique is elaborate, and although the motions never suggest muscular effort or display abnormal contortions, it is nevertheless certain that physical training of the most rigorous character cannot be dispensed with, and that the very ease of the seemingly smooth and spontaneous action results from art hidden by its own perfection. It is also certain that the mechanics of the dance are as nothing to the Japanese spectator compared with the music of its motion, and that he interprets the sfacmfo and legafo of its passages with discrimination amounting almost to instinct and, in some degree, hereditary. In excep tional cases the foreigner's perception may be similarly subtle, but he must generally lack the faculty of apprehending the esoterics of the dance, and thus finds himself in the position of a' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Japan in Days of Yore, Vol. 1 HE breathing time afforded to the great barons of Japan by Hidetada's uneventful administration having passed, it depended entirely on the character of Iemitsu whether or not the form of central feudal government rendered possible by Hideyoshi 's conquests and actually established by Tokugawa Ieyasu should be perpetuated for any length of time. Had any deficiency of that invincibleness of spirit combined with practical sagacity, possessed in such an eminent degree by both Hideyoshi and Ieyasu, displayed itself in the character of Iemitsu, it would have borne with it a serious train of consequences. Never did the subsequent history of a nation depend more on the character of an individual than at that time. Excerpt from Japan and China, 1917 Dr. Reinsch said that they were all very happy to welcome in their midst fellow-citizens from the United States, some of whom were directly interested in Chinese affairs. Chinese business methods were only one degree less confusing than Chinese politics. The Chinese business sense was admirable in transactions between man and man, but it rather tended to lose itself in the air where big corporation finance was concerned. Chinese were apt to take credit as an opportunity of getting money and not ability to perform. A year ago a man came to him and said that he had discovered a solution of the problem of Chinese finance. He was not'in authority himself but said that he knew a man who was in authority. He was asked to unfold his scheme, whereupon he inquired whether it was possible to buy silver direct from the United States, which would effect such a saving by dispensing with the profits of middlemen and banks. The man was informed that after all, the saving would not be so enormous. The man's ardour was somewhat cooled but he said he would still do it. How much silver would you buy P asked the speaker. Oh, replied the man. How are you going to pay for it? He was asked. In Treasury notes, he replied But they would never be accepted, he was told. Why not? The man asked. They are perfectly good. China has never once in her history defaulted. Treasury notes are as good as gold. But the miners cannot accept them, it was pointed out. Would it be better, perhaps, continued the man, to have the Treasury notes secured P Yes, it might be so considered, thespeaker told him. What security do you propose? You know the great treasures in our National Museum. We can pledge them as security. You mustn't do that, said the speaker. It is possible that you might not be able to pay and then the treasures will be taken away. That's why we want to do it! You Ameri cans are our friends and we know you would never do it! (laughter.)
