This book is a selection from the three books that I published so far. 'A Child in Ruins' is the title of the first of these books. A Crianca em Ruinas (A Child in Ruins), first published in 2001 A Casa, a Escuridao (The House, the Darkness), first published in 2002 Gaveta de Papeis (Drawer of Papers), first published in 2008 The selection of the poems was made by me with some suggestions by Hugo. 'A Child in Ruins' was awarded the Award of the Portuguese Society of Authors for the best poetry book of that year. 'Gaveta de Papeis' was awarded the Daniel Faria Award for poetry. This is the first time 'A Child in Ruins' has been translated into English."

Anyone who reads the newspaper, watches television, or listens to casual conversation on the street is aware of the ubiquitous nature of sport. It is everywhere. It flavors our national culture and permeates every corner of our daily lives. Sport in America, as in many countries, is big business, popular culture, and potent politics. It has become its own medium of communication and has important ramifications for international and multicultural relationships. There is no topic that should be of greater interest to social science in general and anthropology in particular than the study of human sport. This volume presents theory, history, practice, and institution of human sport.

Sport written by Richard D. Mandell and has been published by iUniverse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with Children's stories categories.

Today's calender is set in the minds of many people by the World Series, Wimbledon, the Super Bowl, and the World Cup, rather than by months and days. Sport must mean something. What? Richard Mandell's Sport: A Cultural History shows that sport has always vividly illustrated and reinforced the existing social and moral order. Considering that much of modern sport has evolved in England and America, it is remarkable that so few comprehensive serious studies of sport have appeared in English. This fascinatingly written, generously illustrated volume fills a gap in the literature of world cultural history. The author deals here not only with sport in the classical world where the Olympics were born, but also with sport in early industrial England, China, Japan, and modern America.
