Superbly photographed, this book showcases San Francisco's unique and tasteful cafes San Francisco, nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the San Francisco Bay, is one of the best cities in the world for finding a fine neighborhood cafe to sit down in with a notebook (or a netbook) and a steaming mocha and artisan pastry. Explore all the neighborhoods of San Francisco-from the Mission to North Beach, from downtown to just north of the city, over the Golden Gate Bridge into Marin-through its homegrown cafes. Wolff and Paperno have been highly praised for their guides to cafe life: Wolff, for his portraits of the owners whose creative visions have made these unique places; Paperno, for his "richly evocative" photographs (Chicago Tribune). In this guide, Wolff and Paperno turn to the vital cafe life of their own beloved Northern Californian city, a place that, with its emphasis on the local, the organic, and the sustainable, has been teaching the rest of us how to eat and drink for a long time.

Wrestling With Starbucks written by Kim Fellner and has been published by Rutgers University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-06-19 with Political Science categories.

You can find a Starbucks coffeehouse almost anywhere, from Paris, France to Paducah, Kentucky, from the crowded streets of Thailand to shopping malls in Qatar. With nearly 200 of them in New York City alone, this coffee retail giant with humble beginnings has become an actor and icon in the global economy. As we sip our cappuccinos, frappuccinos, and our double half-caf venti low-fat mochaccinos, many of us wonder if Starbucks is a haven of civilization or a cultural predator, a good or bad employer, a fair trader or a global menace. In this entertaining and provocative ramble through Starbucks's ethos and actions, Kim Fellner asks how a coffeehouse chain with a liberal reputation came to symbolize, for some, the ills of globalization. Armed with an open mind and a sense of humor, Fellner takes readers on an expedition into the muscle and soul of the coffee company. She finds a corporation filled with contradictions: between employee-friendly processes and anti-union practices; between an internationalist vision and a longing for global dominance; between community individuality and cultural hegemony. On a daily basis Starbucks walks a fine line. It must be profitable enough to please Wall Street and principled enough to please social justice advocates. Although observers might argue that the company has done well at achieving a balance, Starbucks's leaders run the risk of satisfying neither constituency and must constantly justify themselves to both. Through the voices of Central American coffee farmers, officers at corporate headquarters, independent café owners, unionists, baristas, traders, global justice activists, and consumers, Fellner explores the forces that affect Starbucks's worth and worthiness. Along the way, she subjects her own unabashedly progressive perspective to scrutiny and emerges with a compelling and unexpected look at Starbucks, the global economy, our economic convictions, and the values behind our morning cup of joe.

THE TRUTH LIES ON THE OTHER SIDE... South Baltimore's Angel Café is a trendy new eatery where patrons can enjoy exotic tea, aromatic coffee, and the psychic readings of clairvoyant Tia Melody. The star and main attraction of the restaurant, Tia claims to channel an otherworldly guide, Valentine, and somehow knows all there is to know about her expanding list of patrons. Kat Valenti is a workaholic attorney still coming to grips with the death of her fiancé, Peter, who died two years ago. Although drawn to the Angel Café, she is skeptical of Tia's readings -- until her late fiancé 'contacts' her to shed new light on how he died. Kat's wariness only grows as more clues turn up about Peter's death -- and all of them lead back to the Angel Café. Tia Melody is no simple fortune-teller, and Valentine is no benevolent spirit. Valentine's true power may be almost limitless -- and he doesn't want to tell the future anymore... He wants Kat.

Don T Call It Sprawl written by William T. Bogart and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-09-25 with Business & Economics categories.

In Don't Call It Sprawl, the current policy debate over urban sprawl is put into a broader analytical and historical context. The book informs people about the causes and implications of the changing metropolitan structure rather than trying to persuade them to adopt a panacea to all perceived problems. Bogart explains modern economic ideas about the structure of metropolitan areas to people interested in understanding and influencing the pattern of growth in their city. Much of the debate about sprawl has been driven by a fundamental lack of understanding of the structure, functioning, and evolution of modern metropolitan areas. The book analyzes ways in which suburbs and cities (trading places) trade goods and services with each other. This approach helps us better understand commuting decisions, housing location, business location, and the impact of public policy in such areas as downtown redevelopment and public school reform.

Imaginary States written by Peter Hitchcock and has been published by University of Illinois Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Can transnationalism be separated from capitalist globalization? Can an artist create cultural space and rethink the nation state simultaneously? In Imaginary States, Peter Hitchcock explores such questions to invigorate the analysis of cultural transnationalism. Juxtaposing the macroeconomic realities of commodities with the creation of cultural workers, Hitchcock offers case studies of Nike and the coffee industry alongside examinations of writings by the Algerian feminist Assia Djebar and the Caribbean writers Edward Glissant, Kamau Brathwaite, and Maryse Conde. The stark contrast of literary examples of cultural transnationalism with discussions of commodity circulation attempts to complicate the relationship between the aesthetic and the economic. Blocking our imagination, Hitchcock argues, is the desire to produce cultural diversity under the terms of a global economy. In believing that to have one we must pursue the other, we flatten difference, erase complexity, and fail to grasp the imaginaries at stake. Hitchcock's invocation of the imagination allows for a deeper understanding of transnational "states"--whether states of being, economic states, or nation states. Proffering that the crisis of globalization is a crisis of the imagination, he urges that cultural transnationalism not be feared or suppressed but approached as a way to imagine difference globally.

Named one of the best cookbooks of the year, by The Montreal Gazette Today, increasing emphasis is being placed on the integrity of the way the food we eat is grown. We all dream about produce picked on a summer morning, making its way to our plates by noon. Christian Gaudreault, owner of Vancouver's Tomato Fresh Food Cafe, has spent the last 15 years serving food straight from the farm with delicious results. Christian and his wife Star share their best-loved and most sought-after recipes; at the heart of the book is their simple philosophy: learn how to let farmers' fields and local markets determine your menus, and cooking at home can be fun and uncomplicated, as well as healthy. The beautiful yet deceptively simple recipes feature ingredients that are farm-fresh but widely available in every part of the country. For Christian and Star, part of the meal-making experience is about acknowledging and knowing where your food comes from. It's also about the communal experience of eating, particularly at the Tomato, a casual, soul-enriching place where people from all walks of life share the common bond of food. The book features 32 full-colour photographs, as well as insightful sidebars on how to pick out the best produce and meats, essential products for the pantry, and of course, a history of the tomato, in all its juicy glory. Recipes include: Crab Cakes with Peppercorn Aioli, Pan-Seared Scallops with Mushroom Risotto, Grilled Long-Bone Pork Chop with Pear Chutney, Roasted Tomato and Artichoke Salad, Mediterranean Couscous Salad, Heirloom Tomato Gazpacho, Lemon Meringue Tart, and Peach Blueberry Galette.
