Democracy in America: Volume One is probably the most well known work of Alexis De Tocqueville, a French author and philosopher. It is the author's examination of the social and political systems of the United States. Tocqueville's book was a major success upon its release and immediately became popular in both Europe and the United States. It is still considered one of the greatest pieces of political science literature ever written about the United States, and is a foundational text for the further study of the subject matter. It is a well written and highly readable book. The author had visited America on assignment to investigate the penal system, and while conducting his assigned research Tocqueville took a great interest in the larger political system of America. The book is divided into chapters which each focus on a different aspect of the American political and social system. The author approaches his subject matter thematically, highlighting major themes including the distinct spheres of American life, the influence of the country's Puritan foundation, and the importance of the Federal Constitution on daily life. Tocqueville is largely complementary of the American system, and frequently draws on his knowledge of the French system for comparisons. Democracy in America: Volume One remains an important piece of writing nearly two hundred years after its initial publication. Students of political science, particular in the United States, owe it to themselves to become familiar with Tocqueville's work. Anybody interested in the social and political history of the United States is encouraged to add this work to their library. Demoncracy in American is a classic French text by Alexis de Tocqueville. Its title translates as On Democracy in America, but English translations are usually simply entitled Democracy in America. In the book, Tocqueville examines the democratic revolution that he believed had been occurring over the previous several hundred years. In 1831, Alexis de Tocqueville and Gustave de Beaumont were sent by the French government to study the American prison system. In his later letters Tocqueville indicates that he and Beaumont used their official business as a pretext to study American society instead. They arrived in New York City in May of that year and spent nine months traveling the United States, studying the prisons, and collecting information on American society, including its religious, political, and economic character. The two also briefly visited Canada, spending a few days in the summer of 1831 in what was then Lower Canada (modern-day Quebec) and Upper Canada (modern-day Ontario). After they returned to France in February 1832, Tocqueville and Beaumont submitted their report, Du système pénitentiaire aux États-Unis et de son application en France, in 1833. When the first edition was published, Beaumont was working on another book, Marie, ou, L'esclavage aux Etats-Unis (two volumes, 1835), a social critique and novel describing the separation of races in a moral society and the conditions of slaves in the United States. Before finishing Democracy in America, Tocqueville believed that Beaumont's study of the United States would prove more comprehensive and penetrating.

Democracy in America is arguably the most perceptive and influential book ever written about American politics and society. Authored by Alexis de Tocqueville, a French diplomat, political scientist and historian, it is regarded as a classical account of the democratic system of the United States and has been used as an important reference ever since. Written in the 1830s, De Tocqueville saw the young nation in its infancy and yet his insights into American life and government remain surprisingly current.

Democracy in America was published in two parts. In 1831 the French government sent Tocqueville, then a 35 year old aristocrat and statesman, on a mission to report on the US prison system. During his nine month trip however, he and his buddy Gustave de Beaumont recorded much more: the budding nation's economic and political system, and its social, cultural and religious systems during a the tumultuous Jacksonian political era. The central focus of Democracy in America is the study of the nature of representative democracy - why it had succeeded in the US and failed throughout Europe. With no punches pulled, Tocqueville also does a solid job of predicting where democracy was headed in the US, including the the dangers of democracy - "tyranny of the majority" - as well as the threats to democracy such as the divisive nature of slavery, and a future rivalry with Russia.
