When we think of kinship, we usually think of ties between people based upon blood or marriage. But we also have other ways—nowadays called ‘performative’—of establishing kinship, or hinting at kinship: many Christians have, in addition to parents, godparents; members of a trade union may refer to each other as ‘brother’ or ‘sister’. Similar performative ties are even more common among the so-called ‘tribal’ peoples that anthropologists have studied and, especially in recent years, they have received considerable attention from scholars in this field. However, these scholars tend to argue that performative kinship in the Tribal World is semantically on a par with kinship established through procreation and marriage. Harold Scheffler, long-time Professor of Anthropology at Yale University, has argued, by contrast, that procreative ties are everywhere semantically central, i.e. focal, that they provide bases from which other kinship ties are extended. Most of the essays in this volume illustrate the validity of Scheffler’s position, though two contest it, and one exemplifies the soundness of a similarly universalistic stance in gender behaviour. This book will be of interest to everyone concerned with current controversy in kinship and gender studies, as well as those who would know what anthropologists have to say about human nature. “The study of kinship once ruled the discipline of anthropology, and Hal Scheffler was one of its magisterial figures. This volumes reminds us why. Scheffler’s powerful analyses of kinship systems often conflicted with the views of his more relativist contemporaries. He cut through the fog of theory to emphasise the human essentials, namely the importance of the social bonds rooted in motherhood and fatherhood. Anthropology in its decades-long retreat from the serious study of kinship has lost a great deal. This volume points the way to a restoration.” — Peter Wood, National Association of Scholars

Extension Problems And Stable Ranks written by Raymond Mortini and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-08-02 with Mathematics categories.

This self-contained encyclopedic monograph gives a detailed introduction to Bézout equations and stable ranks, encompassing and explaining needed topological, analytical, and algebraic tools and methods. Some of the highlights included are Carleson's corona theorem and the Bass, topological, and matricial stable ranks. The first volume focusses on topological structures, Banach algebras, and advanced function theory, thus preparing the stage for the algebraic structures in the second volume towards examining stable ranks with analytic methods. The main emphasis is laid on algebras of holomorphic functions. Often a new approach is presented or at least a different angle of sight, which makes the book attractive both for researchers and students interested in these active fields of research.

Optimal Domain And Integral Extension Of Operators written by S. Okada and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-09-09 with Mathematics categories.

This book deals with the analysis of linear operators from a quasi-Banach function space into a Banach space. The central theme is to extend the operator to as large a (function) space as possible, its optimal domain, and to take advantage of this in analyzing the original operator. Most of the material appears in print for the first time. The book has an interdisciplinary character and is aimed at graduates, postgraduates, and researchers in modern operator theory.

In this memoir, Yang-Mills field curvature and current are described as elements of cohomology groups on ambitwistor space, and it is shown that the Yang-Mills current corresponds to the third-order obstruction to extending the corresponding vector bundle. There is also a description of the Yang-Mills field's action density. In addition, several groups of solutions to various differential equations on Miskowski space are characterized as elements of various cohomology classes over ambitwistor space.

This second extended edition of the classic reference on the extension problem of holomorphic functions in pluricomplex analysis contains a wealth of additional material, organized under the original chapter structure, and covers in a self-contained way all new and recent developments and theorems that appeared since the publication of the first edition about twenty years ago.

We give several results on necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of special classes of maps from one shift of finite type onto another of the same entropy. The classes we study include eventual right closing maps, common right closing extensions, and stable right closing maps. Some analogous results for sofic systems are also given. The necessary and sufficient conditions are described algebraically in terms of the dimension group associated to a shift of finite type by W. Krieger.

The first international symposium on NDT-CE (Non-Destructive Testing in Civil Engineering) was held in Berlin, Germany in 1991. Successive symposia were held throughout Europe until 1997. This, the 5th symposium is organized as SEIKEN SYMPOSIUM No. 26, and is sponsored by the Institute of Industrial Science, at the University of Tokyo, Japan. Original objectives of the NDT-CE symposium have been to provide an opportunity for discussing current issues and future perspectives of NDT and for promoting mutual understanding among engineers and researchers. Asia is one of the key regions for further development in NDT and this symposium in Japan will be a good opportunity not only to exchange technical information on NDT, but to promote worldwide friendship between engineers in Asian countries and other nations of the world. This volume contains 70 papers providing the most recent research results and findings. The papers are grouped under the following areas: (1) keynote papers, (2) magnetic / electric, (3) steel structures, (4) integrated test, (5) moisture, (6) strength, (7) acoustic emission, (8) various tests, (9) ultrasonic, (10) impact echo, (11) radar, (12) quality and (13) corrosion / cover.

Extension Of Positive Definite Distributions And Maximum Entropy written by Jean-Pierre Gabardo and has been published by American Mathematical Soc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993 with Mathematics categories.

In this work, the maximum entropy method is used to solve the extension problem associated with a positive-definite function, or distribution, defined on an interval of the real line. Garbardo computes explicitly the entropy maximizers corresponding to various logarithmic integrals depending on a complex parameter and investigates the relation to the problem of uniqueness of the extension. These results are based on a generalization, in both the discrete and continuous cases, of Burg's maximum entropy theorem.
