Excerpt from A First Book of Applied Electricity In this presentation of a few of the elementary principles that underlie the useful applications of electricity and magnetism, reference has been made to the manifestations of electricity which are most often met with in daily life, without first requiring the reader to survey aspects of the subject which, although of ultimate theoretical importance, are not the basis of the applications with which he is already acquainted. For this reason, it has been sought to make the reader familiar with electric currents and their various effects, pointing out how some of these are applied, before he is introduced to electrostatics; for it is considered more important for him to think in volts and amperes than in electrostatic units. In a work of this size, it would have been impossible to enter into details of real electrical engineering practice without unduly restricting the outline of the principles involved. Only the most elementary mathematics are employed, and the object has been more to help to give an understanding of principles than to provide the equipment for the exact calculations which will be of more profit at a later stage when those principles have been mastered. Excerpt from Applied Electricity for Practical Men This volume has been in the process of making during twenty years' experience in teaching Applied Electricity to practical electrical workers; to men who expect to make direct application of the principles given them in the class room to their daily work with commercial circuits and machinery. It is written wholly from the standpoint of the one who puts up and operates electric circuits and apparatus. It does not touch problems of apparatus design. Pure theory is avoided, except as it has direct bearing upon practical matters. The principles stated and the explana tions of apparatus which are ofiered are only such as are necessary in order to present essential elements. They can be elaborated by the instructor as much as he may see fit. Every teacher understands the importance of numerical prob lems in order to make clear the principles and performance of apparatus. Excerpt from Electrical Engineering: First Course A text-book in electrical engineering emanating from Union College may be the occasion of some surprise to those who have been conversant with the development Of the electrical course in that institution. The authors have, it is true', recorded their Objections to the use Of a prescribed text. These Objections still hold good. In brief, they are, first, that a prescribed text tends to take the life out Of the class room, whether the course be con ducted by lectures or recitations, and second, that it tends to take the life out Of the study by relieving the student Of responsibility of continued effort. At Union College the fundamental aim is that the student Shall first comprehend, and then create. Comprehension comes through directed effort. This, the student acquires readily in the laboratory, but in the class room, it is not SO easy. The recitation falls short because it deals with the individual rather than the class. The lecture fails when the student knows he can fall back upon the text-book. The fault, however, is not with the text-book itself, but with the use that is made Of it. Obviously, then, its proper use is as a means Of directing the student's effort toward comprehension. Indeed, it Should com pel effort, not in order to make up for an author's failure to ex press himself clearly, but in order that the ideas Shall sink in and make permanent impressions on the mind. The book Should, therefore, be SO constructed and used that it shall be an additional aid to the student in creating his own expression Of the ideas with which he is brought into contact in the lecture, the recitation and the laboratory. It is desirable that fundamental ideas shall become fixed and clear in the student's mind as soon as possible, thus leaving him in a position to exert his full mental effort on that which is more advanced.
