This spiritual guide to the self is a handbook of tazkiyah or 'self-purification'. Not only does it illustrate the maladies of the human spiritual condition, it recognises the struggles and insecurities we all succumb to from time to time, and offers up the remedies too. The antidotes to our ailments are drawn from Qur'anic verses and authenticate ahadith (Prophetic sayings), inspiring mindfulness of the Almighty Cherisher (SWT) and His Beloved Prophet (PBUH). This guidebook, drawing on the 11th and 12th Century works of the 'Proof of Islam' and the wondrous sage, Imam Abu Hamid Al-Ghazali can be applied to our busy lives in the modern, hi-tech era, and will prove accessible to people of all ages, all denominations: believers and non-believers alike.

This book outlines a vast array of techniques and methods regarding model categories, without focussing on the intricacies of the proofs. Quillen model categories are a fundamental tool for the understanding of homotopy theory. While many introductions to model categories fall back on the same handful of canonical examples, the present book highlights a large, self-contained collection of other examples which appear throughout the literature. In particular, it collects a highly scattered literature into a single volume. The book is aimed at anyone who uses, or is interested in using, model categories to study homotopy theory. It is written in such a way that it can be used as a reference guide for those who are already experts in the field. However, it can also be used as an introduction to the theory for novices.

‘A very deadly squib… likely to upset the equanimity of upholders of capital punishment far more than any ponderous tome of “high explosive” argument or invective.’ Observer A Handbook on Hanging is a satiric tribute to that unappreciated mainstay of civilisation: the hangman. With barbed wit, Charles Duff not only writes of hanging, but also of electrocution, decapitation and gassing; of innocent men executed and of executions botched; of bloodlust mobs and the political expedients of the great. A classic satire, admired by Bertholt Brecht and Dylan Thomas, Duff’s polemic makes it clear that whatever else capital punishment may be said to be – justice, vengeance, a deterrent – it is certainly killing.

Despite continued growth in enrollments, graduate program attrition rates are of great concern to academic program coordinators. It is estimated that only 40 to 50 percent of students who begin Ph.D. programs complete their degrees. This book describes programs, initiatives, and interventions that lead to overall student retention and success.Written for graduate school administrators, student affairs professionals, and faculty, this book offers ways to better support today’s graduate student population, addresses the needs of today’s changing student demography and considers the challenges today’s graduate students face inside and outside of the classroom. The opening section highlights the shifting demographics and contextual factors shaping graduate education over the past 20 years, while the second describes institutional practices to develop the requisite academic and professional development necessary to succeed in master’s and doctoral programs. In conclusion, the editors curate a conversation about different ways institutions can support graduate students beyond the classroom.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1885 edition. Excerpt: ...I think rather of four-footedness as forming one of the attributes of the animal, that is, the predicate is conceived as being included in the intension of the subject. In consequence of the various aspects in which it thus appears that a proposition may be viewed, a good deal of controversy has been excited regarding the real import of propositions. Mr. Mill devotes considerable space to the criticism of various theories on this subject. He opposes the doctrines, that a proposition expresses a relation between two ideas, or between the meanings of two terms, or that it refers something to, or excludes something from, a class; and, in accordance with his theory of the import of terms, he holds that a proposition is to be interpreted as meaning that the things denoted by the subject possess the attributes connoted by the predicate. Now, in all such discussions, as in the similar discussions with reference to the import of terms, considerable confusion arises from allowing the inquiry of the logician to run into the field of psychology. The problem of logic is to find out what is the aspect in which a proposition should be treated with the view of securing the greatest accuracy of thought in its use. But the import attached to propositions for logical purposes is not necessarily supposed to be that of which alone they admit, or even to be the interpretation most commonly put upon them in the confused thinking of ordinary mental life. 3.--Reasoning Proper. When a judgment is analytic, it must be evident to every one who understands its terms, its evidence is contained in its own terms, in itself; it is, therefore, called self-evident. Whether any synthetic judgments also are self-evident, is a question that need not be discussed here....
