Hailed by the authorites as `the future of housing', The Estate in south London was opened with a flourish by the Lord Mayor of London in the late 1960s. The six 20-storey tower blocks were seen as the new way forward for community life in London. However, within a matter of weeks it had all started to go wrong as racial tensions built up and families of ethnic minorities clashed. Based on true stories, THE ESTATE is a novel based around 11 different families living side by side in The Estate, and their perceptions of it. We find out how the Indion family, the gypsies, the gay couple and the landlord of the local pub all deal with new homes and the dynamics of a multi racial community. Building up to a finale at The Estate's Christmas party, this is a poignant and funny account of how life really treated the occupants of the tower blocks.

Charmain Bynoe, a council housing officer for the London borough of Southwark, inspired the nation when she appeared on the TV series Council House Britain. Now, in The Estate, she shines a light on the challenges faced by so many of our citizens and provides heartwarming and inspirational stories of how they have been helped to help themselves. The role of our council housing officers is often overlooked and forgotten about. But their work is vital and, for some, the officers are their best hope for a better quality of life. Sometimes, Charmain works with those who are struggling to cope, finding it hard to keep a roof over their heads or to deal with day-to-day challenges. All they may need is some hope, and she is there to suggest a way forward. In Charmain's powerful new book, she looks back at some of the people she's worked with, from the old man who lives in squalor because he can no longer keep his flat tidy and needs support, to the young Ghanaian woman in a coercive relationship who fears that if she speaks out she will be deported. Britain's housing crisis remains an enormous issue for the country, which was only further highlighted by the Grenfell Tower disaster. But, as Charmain shows, with humanity and consideration for others, we can make things better in ways that don't have to cost a fortune but can deliver results that are truly priceless.

Their wages had been reduced again! Struggling to keep their families on the meager wages paid to agricultural labourers in England in 1833, George Loveless, his brother James, brother-inlaw Thomas Stanfield, and friends founded a legal union, the Tolpuddle Friendly Society of Agricultural Labourers. Land owners, fearful of the consequences of such a union and that the status quo between rich and poor would be irrevocably altered, had George and five members arrested and charged under an obscure law that they had administered an illegal oath when enrolling new members into the union. They were found guilty and sentenced to transportation for seven years. They became known as the Tolpuddle Martyrs. In a parish workhouse Seth Fielding, a fictitious, illiterate farm labourer, lies dying of tuberculosis, consumed with guilt about the part he was forced to play in betraying the six men. Through delirious Seth’s wandering thoughts we see his deep love for his wife Mary and family, the hard life of a farm labourer, the Dorset countryside, and the turmoil the men’s conviction has on the political situation throughout England.

My name is Robin, an Essex boy at heart, and as things go, I live a good life now on and off in the west of Ireland in a beautiful picturesque place called the Galway bay. There are some people who would have called me and my mates gangsters. Sure we got up to mischief, but it just seemed the right thing to do at the time. We didnt like doing what we did and wanted to get out as soon as we had made enough money. We got into this game by accident in some ways, but then we stayed that far under the radar; we went deeper than a nuclear submarine. Definitely not our interpretation of gangsters. We didnt go around carrying guns, threatening or beating up people, just normal run-of-the-mill guys just trying to earn a few bob and lived by the motto Dont pull, dont push and be lucky. But now having given up all my wild ways, if you would like to call it that, sold some of my share in the business I have and earned enough money just to spend my time doing the things I love in lifea bit of painting, fishing, part-time teaching, and having the odd pint of Guinness, or as they call it here porter. For the past twenty-odd years life just cant get better. So with this in mind, it gives me time to reflect on one particular day twenty-odd years ago in a bookies in Romford, Essex.

Revenge comes to Branton. Inspector Stone's past catches up to him with blood and flames. A series of murders rocks the small town of Branton and leaves Inspector Stone with his toughest case, one which may see him paying a tremendous personal price if he can’t solve it quick enough. At first glance the murder of the wife and mother of an Asian shopkeeper appears racially motivated, and the local paper is quick to stir up tensions within the community. Another murder, this time the husband of a local barrister, an attack on a trio of teens, and the discovery of a previously unreported murder all lead Stone to the conclusion that something more than racism is at work. Before he can work out what connects these seemingly unrelated events he is distracted by the most tragic of events. Can Stone and his partner pull themselves together long enough to figure out who is responsible for bringing terror to the streets of Branton, or will the killer complete his fiendish plan and make good his escape?

WHO IS THE ESTATE AGENT? Claire Cavendish is a London Commercial Lawyer whose lifestyle defines success. But when her sixteen-year-old daughter, Annaliese, is diagnosed with osteosarcoma and her husband, Jeremy, says he wants to begin an affair, wealth and success are poor levees against rising tides of grief, panic and the re-surfacing of past trauma as Claire’s life breaks down. When Jeremy insists they sell Orchard House, their opulent London home, the stage is set for the advent of Matthew Summers, a young Estate Agent whose own life is profoundly affected by the people who occupy the house he must sell. The Estate Agent is a story of lives in free-fall when there is nothing left to control. However, it is also a story of courage and the extraordinary beauty of life below the surface that will challenge the most cynical to defend their view that death is the nemesis of life and possibility.

Sukie’s been lonely since the death of her big sister, Kitty—but Kitty’s ghost is still with her. At first that was comforting, but now Kitty’s terrifying anyone who gets too close. Things get even weirder when Sukie moves into her family’s ancestral home, and an older, less familiar ghost challenges her to find a treasure. Her classmate Cole is also experiencing apparitions. Fortunately, an antique broom’s at hand to fly Sukie and Cole to the New-York Circulating Material Repository’s spooky Poe Annex. As they search for clues and untangle ancient secrets, they discover their histories intertwine and are as full of stories of love, revenge, and pirate hijinks as some of the most famous fiction.
