Not since the printing press has a media object been as celebrated for its role in the advancement of knowledge as the scientific journal. From open communication to peer review, the scientific journal has long been central both to the identity of academic scientists and to the public legitimacy of scientific knowledge. But that was not always the case. At the dawn of the nineteenth century, academies and societies dominated elite study of the natural world. Journals were a relatively marginal feature of this world, and sometimes even an object of outright suspicion. The Scientific Journal tells the story of how that changed. Alex Csiszar takes readers deep into nineteenth-century London and Paris, where savants struggled to reshape scientific life in the light of rapidly changing political mores and the growing importance of the press in public life. The scientific journal did not arise as a natural solution to the problem of communicating scientific discoveries. Rather, as Csiszar shows, its dominance was a hard-won compromise born of political exigencies, shifting epistemic values, intellectual property debates, and the demands of commerce. Many of the tensions and problems that plague scholarly publishing today are rooted in these tangled beginnings. As we seek to make sense of our own moment of intense experimentation in publishing platforms, peer review, and information curation, Csiszar argues powerfully that a better understanding of the journal’s past will be crucial to imagining future forms for the expression and organization of knowledge.

Higher Education is in a state of ferment. People are seriously discussing whether the medieval ideal of the university as being excellent in all areas makes sense today, given the number of universities that we have in the world. Student fees are changing the orientation of students to the system. The high rate of non repayment of fees in the UK is provoking difficult questions about whether the current system of funding makes sense. There are disputes about the ratio of research to teaching, and further discussions about the international delivery of courses.

Consumer Culture Theory written by Eric J. Arnould and has been published by SAGE this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-06-21 with Business & Economics categories.

Outlining the key themes, concepts and theoretical areas in the field, this book draws on contributions from prominent researchers to unravel the complexities of consumer culture by looking at how it affects personal identity, social interactions and the consuming human being. A field which is characterised as being theoretically challenging is made accessible through learning features that include case study material, critical reflection, research directions, further reading and a broad mix of the types of consumers and consumption contexts including emerging markets and economies. The structure of the book is designed to help students map the field in the way it is interpreted by researchers and follows the conceptual mapping in the classic Arnould & Thompson 2005 journal article. The book is organised into three parts - the Consumption Identity, Marketplace Cultures and the Socio-Historic Patterning of Consumption. Insight is offered into both the historical roots of consumer culture and the everyday experiences of navigating the contemporary marketplace. The book is supported by a collection of international case studies and real world scenarios, including: How Fashion Bloggers Rule the Fashion World; the Kendall Jenner Pepsi Commercial; Professional Beer Pong, Military Recruiting Campaigns, The World Health Organization and the Corporatization of Education. The go-to text for anyone new to CCT or postgraduate students writing a CCT-related thesis.

Are you harnessing the power of a journal? If you are going through life right now feeling like everything is out of control or that things are not happening the way you planned, you need a journal. I don't mean to be too direct, but it is time for you to discover why you feel the way you do and then figure out what to do about it. Or you can just write stuff in it! The great thing about a lined journal is you can make it into anything you want. A day timer, travel journal, diary, notebook for school, etc. If you need to write something down, a journal is the tool you need. If you want to use it for more than just a notepad then keep reading. Benefits Of Keeping A Journal Almost every successful person seems to have kept a journal in one form or another. Success in this case is not defined by money but overall happiness. Whether or not they called it journalingdoesn'tmatter as they kept a record of their goals, success, failures, feelings and their daily life. Your journal contains the answers to your most burning questions. It is literally the best self-help book you could ever read because it is all about you. Just some of the benefits of journaling are: Allows you to reflect on your life and the changes you are choosing to make or not make Clarifies your thinking and as Tony Robbins says "Clarity is Power" Houses all your million dollar ideas that normally get lost in all the noise of life Exposes repeated patterns of behaviors that get you the results you DON'T want Acts as a bucket for you to brain dump in - a cluttered mind leads to a disorganized life Revisits daily situations giving you a chance to look at it with a different perspective Doesn't crash and lose everything you put into it like electronics (just like electronics though don't get it wet) You may want to keep multiple journals. One that contains your truest and most secret feelings that you guard heavily, but need a way to express. Another that contains all those fantastic ideas, dreams and awesome goals. Maybe just something you doodle in. No matter how you use it getting into the daily habit of journaling has the potential to improve the quality of your life. How To Use A journal Let's look past the simple fact you know how to physically write in a journal and dig into how to actually use your journal. It might contain all the secrets to life's biggest problems but unless you know how to uncover those secrets they stay hidden away in your words. Let the words flow from the heart and be filled with emotions, no holdbacks Make a daily journaling schedule. Each and every day take the time to record your thoughts morning and night. If you love to type notes into your phone all day transfer them to your journal after. Sit in a quiet spot and allow yourself to be judgement free. Your journal is not a reason to turn yourself into an emotional punching bag. Start small. You do not need to write a specific number of words. Just the right amount of honest words that let you feel a sense of being free from negativity and energized with possibility. If you write in your journal like someone is going to read it, you will ever allow yourself to fully express what needs to be expressed. Write like no one will ever read it because it is likely no one ever will unless you want them to. Write how you loved something, were mad at someone, wished something was different or anything you need to. Just do it. Start today writing in your journal. You could even put "Today I bought this awesome journal and will recommend all my friends do the same." Wink Wink Scroll up and hit the add to cart button now.

Manufacturing Morals written by Michel Anteby and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-08-28 with Business & Economics categories.

Corporate accountability is never far from the front page, and as one of the world’s most elite business schools, Harvard Business School trains many of the future leaders of Fortune 500 companies. But how does HBS formally and informally ensure faculty and students embrace proper business standards? Relying on his first-hand experience as a Harvard Business School faculty member, Michel Anteby takes readers inside HBS in order to draw vivid parallels between the socialization of faculty and of students. In an era when many organizations are focused on principles of responsibility, Harvard Business School has long tried to promote better business standards. Anteby’s rich account reveals the surprising role of silence and ambiguity in HBS’s process of codifying morals and business values. As Anteby describes, at HBS specifics are often left unspoken; for example, teaching notes given to faculty provide much guidance on how to teach but are largely silent on what to teach. Manufacturing Morals demonstrates how faculty and students are exposed to a system that operates on open-ended directives that require significant decision-making on the part of those involved, with little overt guidance from the hierarchy. Anteby suggests that this model—which tolerates moral complexity—is perhaps one of the few that can adapt and endure over time. Manufacturing Morals is a perceptive must-read for anyone looking for insight into the moral decision-making of today’s business leaders and those influenced by and working for them.

Earth Science And Applications From Space written by National Research Council and has been published by National Academies Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-10-01 with Science categories.

Natural and human-induced changes in Earth's interior, land surface, biosphere, atmosphere, and oceans affect all aspects of life. Understanding these changes requires a range of observations acquired from land-, sea-, air-, and space-based platforms. To assist NASA, NOAA, and USGS in developing these tools, the NRC was asked to carry out a "decadal strategy" survey of Earth science and applications from space that would develop the key scientific questions on which to focus Earth and environmental observations in the period 2005-2015 and beyond, and present a prioritized list of space programs, missions, and supporting activities to address these questions. This report presents a vision for the Earth science program; an analysis of the existing Earth Observing System and recommendations to help restore its capabilities; an assessment of and recommendations for new observations and missions for the next decade; an examination of and recommendations for effective application of those observations; and an analysis of how best to sustain that observation and applications system.
