Thus a light is said to have an intensity of one candle power when it has the same intensity as a sperm candle which burns 20 grams of sperm in 10 minutes. This is the English unit of intensity. The chapters on the application of lettering and decoration from the commercial standpoint have also been developed considerably, and at the end of the book some notes have been added on books for further study. I have tried to write in as simple a manner as possible, so that the youngest student should have no difficulty in understanding the instructions that are given. So many books have been written on the subject of Illumination that it may seem quite superfluous to add yet another to the long list. Still, I think that a work treating the matter from the present-day stand point ought to be of some service to the student who is desirous of practising this art to-day. I have felt for some time past that there was a need for a work that would deal with the various ways in which this art could be applied in a time like the present. I have found that most of the books that have been written on Illumination treat the subject either from the standpoint of the archaeologist or merely from that of the amateur. It is simply the result of a sincere desire to supply what I feel to be a real need that this book has been written, and in the hope that it may serve as a handbook and guide for the serious worker. It has not been written with the idea of introducing a quick and easy method of becoming expert in the art of illumination. Excerpt from The Lighting Art: Its Practice and Possibilities Mankind has enjoyed such an abundance of natural daylight throughout the entire existence and evolution of the human race that the present general indifference to the possibilities in lighting is easily accounted for. With the advent of artificial light-sources of greater adaptability, the activities of man changed considerably and as modern artificial illuminants are readily controllable there naturally has arisen a new science and art, namely, that of lighting. Such desirable features as adaptability and controllability often result in misuses of artificial light at the hands of those who are indifferent so or untrained in the proper use of light. This together with the greatly increased possibilities led to the development of specialists in lighting and, owing to his coimection with many of the activities upon which the production of light depends, the engineer became the embryo from which the so-called illuminating engineer of today evolved. As the efficiency and adaptability of artificial light-sources and the knowledge of the importance of proper lighting developed, the demands upon the engineer became more varied until today when the many aspects and possibilities are becoming more appreciated, the engineer must greatly extend his horizon and knowledge in order to qualify as a Lighting specialist in the broadest sense. Notwithstanding the extensive possibilities in fighting at the present time and the myriad ramifications of the attendant problems into various sciences and arts, there is still a tendency on the part of many to look upon a lighting problem primarily from the engineering standpoint regardless of the nature of the problem. Bearing witness to this fact are the books on lighting which consist largely of engineering data and considerations. A vast amount of lighting which has been well done, has been accomplished through applications of scientific and artistic principles not covered by engineering data. From this standpoint photometry is not important, and consequently it has not been considered. The principal scientific journals have been worked through for the past twelve years, but the references to the literature given in the different chapters are not complete, the less important Papers being omitted. It was necessary to kindle an interest in illumination to show its vast possibilities and, in some cases, to remove Old prejudices, by the harmonious co-operation of the members of the Council of the Society, and the services Of the large number of corresponding members in different countries to whom special problems were referred for elucidation as they arose. The writer would like to make special acknowledgment of the able assistance rendered by his friend and co-worker, Mr. J. S. Dow, who has been associated with him in this work since the commencement Of the movement. We have all felt that we were engaged on a labour Of love and a process of self-education. Our eyes were enchanted by the glamour Of a new field of knowledge, with so many rich unexplored regions and such countless interesting channels of communication with other studies. Originally the neglected step-child and nobody's business, illumination is now coming to be rightly recognised as the concern of every body - an essential alike in daily life and in every vocation. It is a legitimate source of pride that this was the first country in Europe to recognise the importance of illumination by founding a special society for its study, and our journal, which has been the official organ of the Society since its foundation, is still the only one in Europe devoted ex elusively to lighting problems and the impartial treatment of all illuminants.
